Coalescent theory

This book provides an overview of the history of plate tectonics, including in-context definitions of the key terms. It explains how the forerunners of the theory and how scientists working at the key academic institutions competed and collaborated until the theory coalesced.

Genotypes not directly measured in genetic studies are often imputed to improve statistical power and to increase mapping resolution. The accuracy of standard imputation techniques strongly depends on the similarity of linkage disequilibrium (LD) patterns in the study and reference populations. Here we develop a novel approach for genotype imputation in low-recombination regions that relies on the coalescent and permits to explicitly account for population demographic factors.

Currently, there is no open-source, cross-platform and scalable framework for coalescent analysis in population genetics. There is no scalable GUI based user application either. Such a framework and application would not only drive the creation of more complex and realistic models but also make them truly accessible.

In mammalian genetics, many quantitative traits, such as blood pressure, are thought to be influenced by specific genes, but are also affected by environmental factors, making the associated genes difficult to identify and locate from genetic data alone. In particular, the application of classical statistical methods to single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data collected in genome-wide association studies has been especially challenging.

Inferring phylogenetic relationships of polyploid species and their diploid ancestors (leading to reticulate phylogenies in the case of an allopolyploid origin) based on multi-locus sequence data is complicated by the unknown assignment of alleles found in polyploids to diploid subgenomes.

The present text introduces the use of population balances in the context of batch wet granulation and coating systems and it reviews the latest achievements and proposals in the scientific literature in this field. The nature and framework of population balance theory are highlighted and one-dimensional population balances are introduced from scratch. This may seems tedious at first but the derivation of even the simplest population balances is nevertheless not an easy task, and it is in fact difficult to find complete derivations elsewhere in literature.

The present text concerns the micro-level (particle-level) perspective on the different stages of the granulation process. A range of the newest and advanced quantitative models is presented hereby introducing recent advances in wetting and nucleation modelling, and theory describing granule growth behaviour. The different bonding mechanisms and the strength of liquid bonded particles are emphasised and recent advances in simulation of wet granule breakage is reviewed.

The first historical test on the theory has been the deflection of light grazing the solar surface (Eddington 1919): the compatibility of the theory with this first experiment together with its ability to explain the magnitude of the perihelion advance of Mercury contributed strongly to boost acceptance and worldwide knowledge.
