  • Coconut (Cocos nucifera L.) or 'the tree of life' is one of the most important palm crops due to its versatility. Reduction in coconut productivity due to natural calamity and disease threats has raised the urgent need to develop in vitro techniques that can overcome the obstacles of the traditional breeding method. Embryo culture is one of the earliest in vitro culture techniques applied to practical problems and so far has proved itself to be of great value to breeders.

  • A field experiment was conducted to study the effect of drip irrigation, fertigation and mulching on coconut (Cocos nucifera L.) var. VHC 3. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Block Design (RBD) with seven treatments and three replications. The treatments comprised of 100% (T1), 80% (T2) and 60% (T3) recommended dose of fertilizer with 100 micron thickness plastic mulch and 100% (T4), 80% (T5) and 60% (T6) recommended dose of fertilizer without plastic mulch. The control was with conventional method of irrigation (basin irrigation) without mulch (T7).

  • Pulsed light is an emerging non thermal processing technology used for food decontamination. A laboratory scale pulsed light treatment chamber was designed and fabricated. In this study, tender coconut water was exposed to pulsed light to inactivate the E. coli using different process parameter such as juice layer depth (5, 10, 15 and 20mm), shelf height (5, 10 and 15cm) and number of pulses (60, 120, 180 and 240 flashes) corresponding to an fluency of 4.8, 9.6, 14.4 and 19.2J/cm2 .

  • Coconut (Cocos nucifera L.), is an important perennial crop cultivated across the globe. The demand for quality planting materials is increasing across the world for the establishment of new orchards, rejuvenation of existing orchards and production of quality nuts. Plant tissue culture is an alternate approach for the production of quality planting material. In this investigation, influence of auxin and cytokinin on somatic embryogenesis in coconut is studied using sliced mature embryos as explants in modified Y3 media supplemented with various concentrations of 2,4-D and kinetin.

  • Elite strains of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria were proficiently selected based on the strategic screening approaches. These included in vitro testing for plant growth promotion attributes, seedling bioassay under controlled and under greenhouse conditions. A total of 483 morphologically distinct bacteria [156 rhizosphere fluorescent Pseudomonas spp. (RSF), 206 rhizosphere Bacillus spp. (RSB) and 121 endophytic Bacillus spp. (EB)] were isolated from the roots and rhizosphere soil of coconut palms growing in different states of India.

  • Wide spread potassium and boron deficiency in coconut (Cocos nucifera L.) is a limiting factor for increased nut production in terai region of West Bengal. Accordingly, an experiment was undertaken in a 7.5 m x 7.5 m spaced 11 years old coconut plantation (cv. ECT) laid out in Factorial randomized block design with 9 treatments and 4 replications with graded levels of potassium (900, 1200 and 1500 g of K2O per palm) and boron (25, 50, and 100 g borax/palm) for two consecutive years (2014-15 and 2015-16) to study the influence of leaf potassium and boron on copra yield in coconut in the region.
