Delivery of colostrum within the first several hours after birth is vital for establishing successful passive immunity in neonatal dairy calves. However, it is unclear whether a difference in colostrum feeding strategy can affect the development of the calf gastrointestinal tract. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of colostrum feeding time within the first 12 h after birth on the colonic mucosal immune system in neonatal calves using a genome wide transcriptome analysis.

A field survey was conducted in Aravalli district to determine the healthcare management practices followed by dairy farmers. Data were collected from randomly selected 150 dairy farmers through personal interview with the help of pretested structured schedule. It was revealed that majority of the respondents (86.66%) observed off feed as main symptom of illness followed by decrease in milk production (39.33%), uneasiness (24.00%) and dry muzzle (21.33%).

Standard practice in the dairy industry is to separate the calf and dam immediately after birth and raise calves in individual pens during the milk-feeding period. But this practice is disputed because of animal welfare concerns. A study was conducted to evaluate the existing housing and feeding management practices followed by the dairy animal keepers in U.S. Nagar district of Uttarakhand. It was observed that majority of farmers housed their animal in pucca house 73.89%, whereas 26.11% had kaccha houses for their animals. 81.67% farmers were following group system of animal housing. The study was conducted in Junagadh and Porbandar districts of Gujarat to compare breeding, calf and health management practices opted by buffalo owners (n=300). Majority of farmers practiced natural service (59%), late heat for insemination (76.34%), pregnancy diagnosis (90%) and treatment of anoestrous/repeaters buffaloes (90.33%). Most of respondents attended calving and took care of calves after parturition (98%) and cleaned calves (93.67%). However, few farmers practiced ligation/ cutting and disinfection of navel cord (14.33%) and feeding colostrum to calf (33.33%).

Colostrum is essential to guarantee normal and healthy feeding in newborn ruminants during the first hours. In the present work, Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS), as a spectrochemical analytical technique, and principal component analysis (PCA) as a multivariate analysis method were used to evaluate colostrum compared to mature milk of sheep to plan the nutritional strategies for newly born lambs.
