A comparative assessment of chemical and functional properties of some varieties of lima bean consumed in Arondizuogu, Imo state were carried out. Methodology: Seven varieties of lima bean, identified on the basis of colour were purchased from a local market. One kilogram of each variety was cleaned, washed with tap water and milled into fine flours (70mm mesh screen).

PCA revealed overall acceptability, taste and colour as the top three sensory components contributing to variation in the gari samples. Root size negatively correlated with dry matter, starch content and gari yield. It was concluded that the various cassava varieties exhibited some distinct morpholgical and chemical characteristics which influenced their potentials for gari production.

A yellow shell variety of Pfu. was obtained after years of artificial breeding. Five mungbean varieties released by Punjab Agricultural University (PAU911, SML668, ML818, ML613 and SML832) were characterized using morphological and molecular markers. Phenotypically these varieties showed variation for growth habit, leaf and flower characters, pod colour, position and length, plant height, seed coat lusture and seed size during different growth stages of the crop. Plant morphology characters being polygenic in nature are liable to be influenced by the environment.

Thirty interspecific crosses (including reciprocals) involving three genotypes/varieties of greengram (Vigna radiate (L) Wilczek) cv. HUM 1 HUM 2 & HUM 8 and five genotypes/varieties of blackgram (Vigna mungo (L.) Hepper) cv. T 9, Pant U 19, PDU 1, BHUU 1 & BHUU 91-346-1 were attempted. Nine out of 30 crosses were successful only when greengram was used as seed parents. The crossability ranged from 0.0 to 61.0 per cent. Germination, survival and pod bearing habit of the F1s hybrids were much better in Kharif season as compared to spring/summer season.

Understanding the genetic variability and diversity of a crops species provides opportunity for plant breeders to develop new and improved cultivars having both farmer-preferred and breeder-preferred traits. In the present study 11 morphological characters and 16 quantitative characters were recorded from 27 advance breeding lines/varieties to identify useful alleles for future breeding. A laboratory experiment was conducted at Microbiology Lab (AICRP-WC), University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad during 2012-13 in order to prepare sugarbeet wine from different varieties of Tropical Sugarbeet (TSB). Four TSB varieties were selected viz. Magnolia, PAC 60008, Calixta and SZ 35 for wine preparation. In the first four treatments, the sugarbeet juice was obtained and directly assembled for fermentation without any TSS adjustment (T1 to T4). The obtained juice TSS was adjusted to 23 0 brix in the next four set of treatments (T5 to T8).

An attempt has been made to explore different types of algae from Panikhaiti area of Guwahati, Assam using Winogradsky column. In order to prepare Winogradsy column, soil and water samples were collected from different locations. A transparent, clear plastic bottle was taken and filled with 500g of soil and over layered with 500ml of water sample. The columns were enriched with different carbon and nitrogen supplements. They were covered with plastic sheets and few holes were punctured on them. These were incubated at room temperature (±28°C) in presence of sunlight.
