Combined abiotic stress
-
Ebook "Combined stresses in plants: Physiological, molecular, and biochemical aspects" provides an analysis of all three levels of change in various plants in response to different combinations of stresses. The text provides a general review of the combined stress paradigm, focuses on the impact of higher CO2 levels in combination with other stresses, examines drought stress in conjunction with other abiotic factors in different crop plants as well as the combination of biotic and abiotic factors, and discusses the impact of combined stresses in forest ecosystems.

Acclimation of plants to their environment involves mechanisms at all molecular levels and only the complete temporal and spatial pattern adequately describes the acclimation state. The diversity of physiological states realized in plants increases by the essentially infinite combinations of abiotic and biotic stresses, considering duration, impact order, and strength. The interference between stressors involves phenomena of synergism, antagonism, and indifference.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are essential players of plant defence systems because of their involvement in reprogramming gene expression under adverse environmental conditions including drought and heat, which are considered major players in limiting crop productivity. miR172b-3p was previously determined as a remarkable stress-responsive miRNA in our next-generation sequencing (NGS) analysis in potato.

Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) growth, development and production are sensitive to abiotic stress conditions, yet studies about investigation of stress response of potato plants in regulation of gene expression level are limited. The aim of this study was to identify the role of newly identified Novel_105 miRNA in contrasting potato cultivars (tolerant Unica and sensitive Russet Burbank) in response to heat, drought and combined heat and drought stresses using transgenic approach.

Heat shock protein (Hsp) gene family members in the watermelon genome were identified and characterized by bioinformatics analysis. In addition, expression profiles of genes under combined drought and heat stress conditions were experimentally analyzed. In the watermelon genome, 39 genes belonging to the sHsp family, 101 genes belonging to the Hsp40 family, 23 genes belonging to the Hsp60 family, 12 genes belonging to the Hsp70 family, 6 genes belonging to the Hsp90 family, and 102 genes belonging to the Hsp100 family were found.

Similar to other urban trees, holm oaks (Quercus ilex L.) provide a physiological, ecological and social service in the urban environment, since they remove atmospheric pollution. However, the urban environment has several abiotic factors that negatively influence plant life, which are further exacerbated due to climate change, especially in the Mediterranean area.

Water deficit and soil salinity substantially influence plant growth and productivity. When occurring individually, plants often exhibit reduced growth resulting in yield losses. The simultaneous occurrence of these stresses enhances their negative effects. Unraveling the molecular mechanisms of combined abiotic stress responses is essential to secure crop productivity under unfavorable environmental conditions.

Brassica napus L. is one of the most important oil crops in the world. However, climate-changeinduced environmental stresses negatively impact on its yield and quality. Cuticular waxes are known to protect plants from various abiotic/biotic stresses.

clusterbean (Cymopsis tetragonoloba (L.) Taub.) An attempt has been made to evaluate the effect of abiotic constraints (drought and temperature) on the growth of rhizobia isolated from clusterbean grown in semiarid regions of Haryana with a view to screen out stress tolerant rhizobial isolates. A total of 158 rhizobial isolates have been used for screening their stress tolerating ability with contrast to environmental abiotic soil conditions commonly prevailing in semi-arid regions of Haryana. All the isolates were phenotypically and biochemically characterized.

Combining ability analysis for yield and its component under late sown condition in bread wheat involved ten diverse parents and their 45 F1s and their F2s indicated significance differences among the parents for gca and crosses for sca for all characters under studied. The GCA and SCA components of variances in both generations showed significant for all traits indicating additive and non additive gene action controlled the pattern of inheritance for the concern traits over the both generations.

The abiotic stresses, such as soil salinity and sodicity are largely responsible for the low productivity of crops mainly due to low availability of micro-nutrients especially as zinc (Zn) and iron (Fe). Therefore, judicious management of plant nutrients in these soils is as important as their reclamation.

Individual plants adapt to their immediate environment using a combination of biochemical, morphological and life cycle strategies. Because woody plants are long-lived perennials, they cannot rely on annual life cycle strategies alone to survive abiotic stresses.

Despite the fact that rising global population requires increased crop production, the rate of increase in crop yields is currently declining. The traits related to yield, stability and sustainability should be a major focus of plant breeding efforts. These traits include durable disease resistance, abiotic stress tolerance along with nutrient and water use efficiency. The use of DNA markers in plant breeding is called marker assisted selection (MAS).

Barley (Hordeum vulgare) is an important crop cultivated across the world. Drought is a major abiotic factor compromising barley yield worldwide, therefore in modern spring barley cultivars superior seed and malting quality characteristics should be combined with reasonable level of drought tolerance.

Urdbean has narrow genetic base due to common ancestry of various superior genotypes, poor plant type and genetic vulnerability to biotic and abiotic stresses. The underutilized related specie, V. umbellata (ricebean), nutritive and resistant to most of the fungal pathogens, is speculated to be potential donor. Therefore, V. mungo and V. umbellata were crossed with a view to introgress alien genes. On inter-specific hybridization, the presence of pre-fertilization barriers and post-fertilization barriers were observed. As, hybrids exhibited reduced germination and sterility.

Groundnut contributes 40% of the total oil seeds production in the country. Groundnut is a rainfed crop in kharif season with least productivity. Hence an attempt was made for improving the abiotic stress resistance of plants through seed bacterization with biological agents. The present study was undertaken to examine the impact of bacterization of Rhizobium and Methylobacterium radiotolerans to enhance groundnut germination rate and vigour index.

Nitrogen has been associated to lettuce fresh weight accumulation. In this way, different bio stimulants formulations containing amino acids have been commercially offered although the yield increase has not been properly supported. The aim of this work was a) to quantify the changes in lettuce fresh weight accumulation and the physiological mechanism involved in plants sprayed with different amino acid solutions and (b) to characterize the responses to root restrictions under nursery with non-limited nitrogen supply.

The Saltol QTL introgresion lines were developed and selected through generations from Vietnam popular rice variety AS996 using markers assisted backrossing (MABC). After three backcross generations, the selfing generations were developed. Conventional breeding were used to select the high yield, high quality lines.
