Major improvement in sunflower breeding requires heterotic hybrids which can be achieved by tapping combining ability of F1 hybrids developed from crossing of two genetically diverse female lines with male testers. In the present study, 56 hybrids were evaluated derived from four lines and fourteen testers’ crosses in a line × tester mating design. The analysis of variance revealed existence of highly significant differences (p=0.05) among genotypes, parents and parents vs crosses indicating the presence of heterosis for quantitative traits in sunflower.

Development of drought tolerant lines becomes increasingly more important in maize. Therefore, an investigation was undertaken with six lines VIM 57 (L1), VIM 61 (L2), UMI 1200 (L3), VIM 244 (L4), VIM 15 (L5), VIM 108 (L6) and four testers VIM 236 (T1), VIM 93 (T2), VIM 418 (T3), VIM 153 (T4) which were crossed in a Line x Tester mating design to synthesize twenty four hybrids and were evaluated under contrasting soil moisture regimes to identify the potential parents, superior cross combinations and to formulate the breeding strategies for yield improvement in maize.

The present study was aimed to assess the general combining ability of parents and specific combining ability of their crosses for yield and yield related traits. Eight inbred lines were crossed with three testers using line × tester mating design. The resulting twenty-four crosses along with eleven parents were evaluated at two locations during Kharif 2015 in a complete randomized block design.

To ascertain combining ability and genetic variance of thirteen quantitative characters by evaluating forty hybrids developed by line x tester mating design using ten females and four males in pigeonpea. Analysis of variance for combining ability revealed that variance due to parents (ó2 gca) were found significant for majority of the traits under study except seed yield per plant and variance due to hybrids (ó2 sca) were found significant for all the traits under study, which indicates the presence of both additive and non additive gene action.

The present investigation was carried out involving thirty hybrids which were derived by crossing ten lines with three testers. These hybrids were evaluated along with their parents in randomized block design (RBD) with three replications. The recorded data was subjected to Line × Tester analysis. The analysis of variance for combining ability revealed that the mean sum of squares due to parents and hybrids were highly significant for almost all the characters except for days required to 50% pistillate flowering, vine length, number of primary branches per plant and internodal length.

In view to invigorate hybrid rice breeding and exploration of heterosis in untapped, low productive genetic pool of non-basmati aromatic rice, altogether thirtyF1’s were generated in L x T design fashion with thirteen parents (3 testers and 10 lines), and were evaluated along with the parents to unravel the combining ability for 28 yield and yield contributing traits. The study revealed importance of both additive and non-additive gene effects in governing yield and yield components with preponderance of non-additive gene action for most of the yield components.

Five maize inbred lines and their 10 direct crosses produced through half-diallel scheme were evaluated with two checks during kharif-2014 for grain yield and its component traits. The crosses namely JP25 W95 × CM-138 and CML-439 × CM-138 recorded higher level of economic heterosis for grain yield. Combining ability analysis suggested the preponderance of non-additive gene action for majority of the traits viz., grain yield, 100- kernel weight, ear length, ear girth and number of grain rows per cob.
