Commercial cold storage

The commercialization of mushrooms is critical because they have a short shelf life. For this reason, we investigated the effect of agar-agar and egg white protein on weight loss, polyphenol oxidase and catalase, protein content, total phenolics, total antioxidant capacity, respiration rate, ethylene production and storability of button mushrooms. Our findings suggested that the treatment of edible coating delayed remarkably senescence and maintained the quality of button mushroom.

Zucchini fruit is susceptible to chilling injury (CI), but the response to low storage temperature is cultivar dependent. Previous reports about the response of zucchini fruit to chilling storage have been focused on the physiology and biochemistry of this process, with little information about the molecular mechanisms underlying it. In this work, we present a comprehensive analysis of transcriptomic changes that take place after cold storage in zucchini fruit of two commercial cultivars with contrasting response to chilling stress.

Cantaloupe is susceptible to cold stress when it is stored at low temperatures, resulting in the loss of edible and commercial quality. To ascertain the molecular mechanisms of low temperatures resistance in cantaloupe, a cold-sensitive cultivar, Golden Empress-308 (GE) and a cold-tolerant cultivar, Jia Shi-310 (JS), were selected in parallel for iTRAQ quantitative proteomic analysis.

Albinism is a serious disorder of strawberry in which fruits appear bloated, develop poor color flavor and become susceptible to fruit rot during storage. Many factors have been reported to be associated with albinism, but vigorous vegetative growth of the plant is considered as the primary factor. An experiment was conducted to know the effect of storage conditions on seed quality of onion cv. Arka kalyan. The experiment consisted of three storage conditions (ambient condition, conditioned cold storage (18-20◦C, 45-50% RH), commercial cold storage (5-7 ͦC , 65 % RH). The results revealed that, seeds stored in commercial cold storage (5-7 ͦC + 65 % RH) recorded significantly higher seed germination, speed of germination, test weight, root length, shoot length, seedling dry weight, vigour index, lower moisture content and electrical conductivity after 10 months of storage.

Changes in melanosis, microbiology, and fat oxidation in Pacific white shrimps (Litopenaeus vannamei) when treated with Houttuynia cordata extract (designated E-DC) were monitored during cold storage for seven days at 20 C. Whole shrimps treated with E-DC solution (0.025%, w/v) revealed slow growth of total aerobic microorganisms, Enterobacteriaceae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, throughout cold storage in comparison to the control sample treated by water (p0.05).
