Genomic prediction (GP) is used in animal and plant breeding to help identify the best genotypes for selection. One of the most important measures of the effectiveness and reliability of GP in plant breeding is predictive accuracy. An accurate estimate of this measure is thus central to GP.

Zhengdan 958 (Zheng 58 × Chang 7–2), a commercial hybrid that is produced in a large area in China, is the result of the successful use of the heterotic pattern of Reid × Tang-SPT. The jointing stage of maize is the key period from vegetative to reproductive growth, which determines development at later stages and heterosis to a certain degree.

Maize is considered to be the third most important cereal after rice and wheat in India. It is being cultivated worldwide in a wider range of environmental conditions, because of its greater adaptability. It is known to be affected by more than 62 diseases. Among them, turcicum leaf blight caused by Exserohilum turcicum (Pass.) Leonard and Suggs is of significant importance as it drastically reduces the yield by reducing photosynthetic activity of the plant.

A trial was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary salts of organic acids for a period of 42 days on the serum parameters of broiler chicks. 300 commercial broiler chicks were randomly distributed into five treatments having six replicates consisting of ten birds each. A maize-soybean based diet was used as the basal diet (Control group). The basal diet was supplemented with salts of organic acids (sodium butyrate, calcium propionate @ 0.5% and 1%).

In the present study SSR markers were shown to be polymorphic between parents which would help in establishing the genetic purity of hybrids in commercial seed lots. Also, few SSRs were found to discriminate among the set of hybrids which will ease the seed identity of competing hybrids in seed chain. Low probability of identity based on marker information suggests that a set of markers identified in present study can be efficiently used in establishing distinctness, identity and purity of hybrids in open markets after their release.

Twenty four newly developed maize hybrids along with three commercial checks were evaluated for their yield performance at three locations under heat stress and optimal conditions. Pooled analysis of variance revealed significant differences among hybrids for grain yield. Mean sum of squares due to environments and linear component of environments were significant for all the traits studied.

A QTL mapping study for maize resistance to the Mediterranean corn borer (MCB) was performed with a RIL population derived from the cross B73 × CML103. To develop commercial inbreds of maize resistant to the MCB for use in Europe, it would be useful to transfer resistance from tropical germplasm like the subtropical inbred CML103 to temperate lines.

To study antimicrobial effects of supplementation of turmeric on intestine of broilers, three hundred, one day old commercial broiler chicks were taken for the experiment. The chicks were distributed randomly to six dietary treatments having five replicates each and ten birds per replicate. Maize-soybean meal based diet served as the basal diet.

Among biotic stresses affecting maize, the pre-harvest aflatoxin contamination produced by Aspergillus flavus and turcicum leaf blight (TLB) caused by Excerohilum turcicum are most important diseases in India. Resistance of maize to aflatoxin contamination and TLB, is a penultimate goal in breeding programs that screen for these important traits with the aim of developing resistant commercial hybrids. Hence a study on reaction of 26 inbred lines of heat tolerant maize to both the diseases was conducted under artificial epiphytotic field conditions for two seasons.

Effect of the nutrient formulations for pre-sowing seed treatment on germination and growth of maize seedlings was studied. The formulations comprised separate copper nanoparticles (NanoCu), IET1- based on a Novalon Seed Treatment product, IET2 - based on humate metal-organic-coordination complexes (MOC), Nualgi – based on nano silica, wherein microelements were adsorbed on the surface of the silica nanoparticles, and formulations with microelements in a form of Metal-EDTA complexes, based on commercial fertilizer products of Novalon, Wuxal and Comex companies.

Cotton (Gossypium spp.) is one of the important commercial crops grown for its natural fibre, which has its own place among many other natural and synthetic fibres. Among the commercial crops grown in India, cotton occupies a pride place of being the prime supplier of raw material (85%) for textile industry, which is one of the leading industries in the country. In India, cotton provides means of livelihood for about 60 million people through its cultivation, trade and industrial use. Exploitation of heterosis has lead to improvement in productivity of different crops including cotton.

Genetic gain in Testcrosses derived from heat tolerant multi-parental synthetic populations of maize
Heat stress due to prolonged high ambient temperature during critical growth stages is a serious threat to crop production worldwide. Though being a C4 crop, maize has relatively wider adaptation, however, weather extremes such as heat stress is challenging its threshold limits. There is an absolute requirement of heat tolerant cultivars in the present condition as climate change has a become reality.

An incubation experiment was conducted at ADAC & RI, Trichy, to study the effect of ZnSO4, chelated Zn and Zn enriched organics on dynamics of Zn in sodic soil at different incubation period. The organics viz., FYM, press mud, poultry manure and vermicompost were enriched (10:1 ratio) with ZnSO4 @ 37.5 kg ha-1 (recommended dose for hybrid maize). The ZnSO4, chelated Zn and Zn enriched organics were added @ 37.5 kg ZnSO4 ha-1 . Incubated soil sample were analysed for Zn fractions viz.

Maize in Ghana is extensively traded. Miracle (1966) estimated that in the mid-1960s, fully one-third of Ghana’s maize crop was being marketed—at the time an unusually high proportion for a subsistence crop in sub-Saharan Africa. The proportion has increased over the years with the rise of commercial farming. Today, at least half of the national maize crop is believed to enter the market (GGDP 1991; Alderman 1991).

Maize has been cultivated in Ghana for several hundred years. After being introduced in the late 16th century, it soon established itself as an important food crop in the southern part of the country. Very early on, maize also attracted the attention of commercial farmers, although it never achieved the economic importance of traditional plantation crops, such as oil palm and cocoa.

In addition to documenting the uptake and diffusion of the three GGDP-generated maize technologies, this case study provides valuable insights about the many factors that can affect the adoption of agricultural innovations in general. The survey results show that adoption of improved production technology is directly influenced by three sets of factors: (1) characteristics of the technology (e.g., complexity, profitability, riskiness, divisibility, compatibility with other technologies); (2) characteristics of the farming environment (e.g.

The contribution of inorganic fertilizer to surface water N contamination increased after 1960 as the widespread and intensive use of inorganic N fertilizers rapidly expanded. [3] The use of N fertilizer has allowed greater production of feed and food crops per unit area cultivated. In the United States, 75% of N fertilizer is applied to maize, while in other countries, N fertilizer is primarily used on wheat and rice.
