Common bean Phaseolus vulgaris L.
-
Among legumes, common bean plays significant role in the diet of Cameroonians. It is a good source of protein, fiber and micronutrients. However, bean contains substantial amount of antinutrients, which limit their utilization. This work evaluates the effect of different processing methods on the macronutrients, micronutrients and antinutrients contents in two bean cultivars (Phaseolus vulgaris L.).

In this study, 23 GASA genes in common bean were identified and detailed bioinformatics analyzes were conducted at both gene and protein levels. Pvul-GASA proteins were categorized into three clusters, and a total of 13 duplication events (12 segmental and one tandem) were shown to play a role in the expansion of the GASA gene family in Phaseolus vulgaris L. The identified Pvul-GASAs have been shown to be linked to stress and hormone signaling pathways.

CesA and Csl gene families, which belong to the cellulose synthase gene superfamily, plays an important role in the biosynthesis of the plant cell wall. Although researchers have investigated this gene superfamily in several model plants, to date, no comprehensive analysis has been conducted in the common bean.

Climate change models predict more frequent incidents of heat stress worldwide. This trend will contribute to food insecurity, particularly for some of the most vulnerable regions, by limiting the productivity of crops. Despite its great importance, there is a limited understanding of the underlying mechanisms of variation in heat tolerance within plant species.

Common bean is an important staple crop in the tropics of Africa, Asia and the Americas. Particularly smallholder farmers rely on bean as a source for calories, protein and micronutrients. Drought is a major production constraint for common bean, a situation that will be aggravated with current climate change scenarios.

Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is a relevant crop cultivated over the world, largely in water insufficiency vulnerable areas. Since drought is the main environmental factor restraining worldwide crop production, efforts have been invested to amend drought tolerance in commercial common bean varieties.

Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) plays an important role in human and animal nutrition. However, its cultivation in Cameroon is affected by diseases, especially the white bean mold caused by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum. Methods of protection against this pathogen are the use of chemical fungicides which are very expensive and degrade the environment. The search for alternative solutions is necessary. The objective of this work is to evaluate the antifungal activity of aqueous and organic extracts of Moringa oleifera seeds on the development of two strains of S. sclerotiorum.

Here we report the usefulness of a new method for evaluation of a core set of common bean genotypes in terms of a new index based on a combination of stress susceptibility index, the stress tolerance index, the mean production index, the geometric mean production index, and the tolerance index, which have been previously used either in isolation or together for understanding water stress adaptation. The method is based on a scoring scale, offers simple and easy visualization and identification of resilient, productive and/or contrasting genotypes based on grain yield.

A two season field experiment and a single season screen house experiment were conducted to assess the effect of water stress periods and rhizobial inoculation in five (5) P. vulgaris (L.) cultivars. The experiment consisted of 2 levels of rhizobia (with and without inoculation), two stress levels (With and without stress) and five cultivars of P. vulgaris (L.) (KAT B9, KAT B1, F9 Kidney Selection, F8 Drought Line and JESCA). The field experiment was conducted for two consecutive seasons, while the screen house study was done in a season. Results showed that proline content (μmol g-1 .

Over the last two years, considerable advances have been made in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) genomics, especially with the completion of the genome sequence and the availability of RNAseq data. However, as common bean is recalcitrant to stable genetic transformation, much work remains to be done for the development of functional genomics tools adapted to large-scale studies.

The study herein determines the available variability among the unexplored common bean germplasm based on morphological parameters. The collection of one hundred and thirty five genotypes was done and the experimental data for nine phenotypic yield attributing traits was recorded in the experimental field of SKUAST Jammu, Main Campus, Chatha for the two years. The field experiment was laid out in Randomized Block Design and the observations were recorded from six randomly selected tagged plants.

Drought is increasingly becoming a serious challenge reducing common bean productivity. A study was conducted with the objective of evaluating common bean cultivars against different concentration levels of Polyethylene glycol which induces drought stress in radical length and root biomass to identify cultivars of common beans tolerant to drought stress and rank top performing accordingly. Complete Randomized Design with four replications and 50 treatments were employed in the laboratory experiment.
