Common production medium

Mycelial growth and exopolysaccharide production of Fomitopsis feei was studied in common production medium by changing different physiological parameters such as carbon, nitrogen sources, inoculum size, incubation time, pH, temperature, agitation. Glucose, ammonium sulphate, 6mm of inoculum, 8th and 14th days of incubation, pH 3, 30°C temperature and 150 rpm agitation were the best for the production of mycelium.

Handicraft production has complexity in its product, as well as manufacturing processes. Especially in case of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), the production characteristics are chaotic and hard to control. Several problems can be pointed out, e.g. line unbalance, excessive stock, improper work assignment, ambiguous workflow,… Such a production system with these flaws incorporated cannot be reliable and effective. However; in Vietnam, this situation is common due to the small size of business operation, large number of workers, and cheap price for labour hour.

Phalaenopsis orchids occupy a top position in the international market as pot plant. Commonly used media for growing Phalaenopsis orchid are coconut husk chips, tree bark, fir bark, cocopeat and sphagnum moss. Growing medium is important as it provides anchorage, retains moisture, nutrients and aerates the roots. In addition to these functions, a study was carried out to assess the possible growth promoting effects of sphagnum moss on orchids when used as growing medium. Eight month old hardened plants of Phalaenopsis ‘Magic Kiss’ were used for the trial.
