Common vetch
-
Common vetch (Vicia sativa L.) is a forage grain legume of high protein content and high nitrogen fixation, relevant in sustainable agriculture systems. Drought is the main limiting factor of this crop yield. Genetic resources collections are essential to provide genetic variability for breeding.

Three cereals viz. oats (Avena sativa L.), barley (Hordeum vulgare) and annual rye grass (Lolium multiflorum) were evaluated in pure stands as well as in mixtures of 50:50 ratios with common vetch (Vicia sativa L.) and field pea (Pisum sativum) under temperate conditions of Kashmir Valley to address the problem of nutritious green fodder for livestock.

The effects of inoculation with Rhizobium on forage yield and yield components of common vetch (Vicia sativa L.) were evaluated under rainy conditions in Samsun, Turkey, in the 2001-2002 and 2002-2003 growing seasons. Common vetch cultivars Kubilay, Ürem, Kara elçi, Uluda¤, Emir, Çubuk, Nilüfer and Rhizobium leguminosarum were used as materials.

Improving forage production for an expanding livestock population is essential in the Çukurova and GAP (South-eastern Anatolia Project) regions of Turkey. Feed shortages, especially evident during winter, can be alleviated by introducing high yielding common vetch (Vicia sativa L.) cultivars into crop rotations.

Forage mixtures are common agricultural practices for the energy and protein needs of animals. In this study, common vetch (Vicia sativa L.), Hungarian vetch (Vicia pannonica L.), and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) mixtures in different seeding rates were investigated in terms of forage yield and quality.
