Thermophysical properties of industrially complex fluids whose composition is always ill-defined are in practice predicted by using thermodynamic models. To ensure the prediction accurately and reliably, a three-step procedure to obtain the properties of these fluids must be validated. The focus of this study is laid on a short review of tools which can be served for each of the three steps.

In this study, the selective oximation of structurally diverse aromatic aldehydes (versus ketones) to the corresponding aldoxime derivatives was investigated using the combination system of NH2OH·HCl and bis-thiourea complexes of cobalt, nickel, copper and zinc chlorides, MII(tu)2Cl2, in a mixture of CH3CN-H2O (1:1).

The lipopolysaccharide (LPS) ofChlamydia trachomatis serotype E was isolated from tissue culture-grown element-ary bodies and analyzed structurally by mass spectrometry and 1 H, 13 Cand31 P nuclear magnetic resonance. The LPS is composed of the same pentasaccharide bisphosphate aKdo-(2–8)-aKdo-(2–4)-aKdo-(2–6)-bGlcN-4P-(1–6)-aGlcN-1P (Kdo is 3-deoxy-a-D-manno-oct-2-ulosonic acid) as reported forC. trachomatisserotype L2[Rund,S.,Lind-ner,B.,Brade,H. and Holst,O. (1999)J. Biol. Chem.274, 16819–16824].

The peptide hormone endothelin transmits various signals throughGprotein-coupled receptors, the endothelin type A (ETAR) and B (ETBR) receptors. Caveolae are specialized lipid rafts containing polymerized caveolins. We examined the interaction of ETBR with caveolin-1, expressed in Sf9, COS-1, and HEK293 cells, and its effects on the subcellular distribution and the signal transduction of ETBR.

Bermuda grass pollen (BGP) contains a very complex mixture of allergens, but only a few have been characterized. One of the allergens, with an apparent molecular mass of 21 kDa, has been shown to bind serum IgE from 29% of patients with BGP allergy. A combination of chromato-graphic techniques (ion exchange and reverse phase HPLC) was used to purify the 21 kDa allergen.

Cell-free protein synthesis using cell extracts from Escherichia coli, wheat germ and rabbit reticulocytes has been used for over 40 years to produce small amounts of radiolabeled proteins for identification of gene products and other applications. In the E. coli system programmed with plasmid DNA, the cell extract contains or is supplemented with an RNA po-lymerase to transcribe the gene, and the mRNAs are translated by a complex mixture that contains ribo-somes and a full complement of initiation,...

BASICS OF CRUDE OIL Crude oils are complex mixtures containing many different hydrocarbon compounds. An average crude oil contains about 84% carbon, 14% hydrogen, 1 ÷ 3% sulfur and less than 1% each of nitrogen, oxygen, metals and salts. Simple crude oil assays are used to classify crude oils as paraffinic, naphthenic, aromatic or mixed, based on the predominant proportion of similar hydrocarbon molecules. The comprehensive crude assays determine the value of the crude: its yield and quality of useful products.
