The thesis aims at examining the metaphors of season in English and Vietnamese songs in the light of Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT). Subsequently, a comparison is made to find out the similarities and differences between the conceptual metaphors of season in English and Vietnamese song lyrics when SEASON is treated as a target domain as well as a source domain. Simultaneously, several explanations are given as causes for these similarities and differences.

This study aims to investigate idioms that carry conceptual metaphor about power based on the theory of Lakoff and Johnson. To go further, this study is done to explore the similarities and the differences between the use of metaphor about power in English and Vietnamese idioms that reflect the culture of each language community.

Studying this thesis, that gets a lot of knowledge to understand more about the items of cognitive linguistics. Studying, applying, using cognitive linguistics is of large significance with us in dealing with numerous problems of linguistics that was not explained by classic theory. Especially with foreign language learners like me, cognitive linguistics opened a new view so that they can approach foreign language easier.

The aim of the thesis is to apply the theory in cognitive linguistics to Vietnamese to establish the conceptual structure and conceptual domain “food”, discover the target domains, the source domains, mapping system and the mapping mechanism among the conceptual domains; codifying metaphorical notion of "food" in Vietnamese in order to study cognitive characteristics and Vietnamese cultural identity through conceptual metaphor of "food”.

Việc dạy và học thành ngữ tiếng Anh luôn gây nhiều khó khăn cho cả giáo viên lẫn học viên. Từ quan điểm của ngôn ngữ học tri nhận, bài báo trình bày thuyết ẩn dụ ý niệm và đề xuất áp dụng lí thuyết này để dạy các tổ hợp thành ngữ tiếng Anh. Qua việc phân tích ẩn dụ ý niệm ở một số thành ngữ minh họa, tác giả chứng minh rằng nghĩa của thành ngữ được tạo thành từ các ẩn dụ ý niệm chứ không phải có tính võ đoán và trình bày những đề xuất cho việc giảng dạy tiếng Anh.
