Housing is an essential amenity. However the impact, due to current trend of increasing embodied energy consumption per capita should be minimised. This may even require major cultural shift to traditional construction processes, practices and home owner perceptions. This thesis presents the outcomes of a study investigating ways to produce a “bill of embodied energy” for housing sector aligned to the standard practice of “bill of quantities”.

The aim of this research is to add to knowledge in the adoption of Information Systems field, by using Design Science Research to look at the implementation of Elluminate in university learning environments. The broad aim of this research is to better understand the implementation of web technologies affordances in higher education from stakeholders’ perspectives. This thesis investigates case studies on Elluminate implementation in subjects to develop guidelines for implementing technology affordances in learning activities.

In this paper, we present a novel global protein-protein interaction network alignment algorithm, which is enhanced with an extended large neighborhood search heuristics. Evaluated on benchmark datasets of yeast, fly, human and worm, the proposed algorithm outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms. Furthermore, the complexity of ours is polynomial, thus being scalable to large biological networks in practice.

The conduction of protons through human Nox2 has pre-viously been shown to be dependent upon His115. Align-ment of sequences for both animal and plant Nox proteins indicated that histidines 115 and 119 are both highly con-served, while His111 was conserved among animal homo-logues of Nox1–4. To investigate the possible role that these histidine residues might play in the conduction of protons through Nox2, we have introduced both paired and single mutations into these histidine residues.

Spinocerebellar ataxia types 2 (SCA2) and 3 (SCA3) are autosomal-dominantly inherited, neurodegenerative dis-eases caused by CAG repeat expansions in the coding regions of the genes encoding ataxin-2 and ataxin-3, respectively. To provide a rationale for further functional experiments, we explored the proteinarchitectures of ataxin-2 and ataxin-3. Using structure-based multiple sequence alignments of homologous proteins, we investigated domains, sequence motifs, and interaction partners.
