Vietnam has many traditional copper casting craft villages from the North to the South, which resulting in large amounts of copper smelter slag containing Zn, Cu, Al, etc. In this study, zinc oxide and copper metal have been recovered from brass smelter slag (71.80 wt.% ZnO and 10.32 wt.% CuO) by a hydrometallurgical process.

Copper and zinc are also toxic to humans when high levels are ingested and an excess of copper and zinc interferes with plant growth. It is important to monitor copper and zinc content in soil to avoid marketing food products which contain dangerous amounts of these heavy metals. This article presents the results of a study done to determine the copper and zinc content of soil and four agricultural products grown in Tan Lap Co-operative, Dan Phuong District, Hanoi.

The Sonogashira cross-coupling reactions were used to synthesize 5 new monoalkynyl derivatives (10a-e) and 2 dialkynyl derivatives (12a-b) containing thieno[3,2-b]thiophene from monoaryl thieno[3,2-b]thiophen in moderate yield. The procedure was optimized and triphenylphosphine (0.2 eq.), palladium diacetate (0.1 eq), copper (I) iodide (0.2 eq.), THF, iPr2NH were found to be the best in these cases. The structures of the (10a-e) and (12a-b) compounds were elucidated by 1H and 13C NMR and mass spectral analysis.

Quercetin 2,3-dioxygenase (2,3QD) is a copper-containing dioxygenase that catalyses the oxidation of the flavonol quercetin to 2-protocatechuoylphloroglucinol carboxylic acid with concomitant production of carbon monoxide. In contrast to iron dioxygenases, very little is known about copper dioxygenases. We have characterized 2,3QD from the fungus Aspergillus japonicus by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR). At pH 6.0, 2,3QD shows a mixture of two EPR species. The major form has parameters typical of type 2 Cu sites (g// ¼ 2.330, A// ¼ 13.

Four substrate analogs, 4-(2-naphthyloxy)-2-butyn-1-amine (1), 1,4-diamino-2-chloro-2-butene (2), 1,6-diamino-2,4hexadiyne (3), and 2-chloro-5-phthalimidopentylamine (4) have been tested as inhibitors against mammalian, plant, bacterial, and fungal copper-containing amine oxidases: bovine plasma amine oxidase (BPAO), equine plasma amine oxidase (EPAO), pea seedling amine oxidase (PSAO), Arthrobacter globiformis amine oxidase (AGAO), Escherichia coli amine oxidase (ECAO), and Pichia pastoris lysyl oxidase (PPLO).

Wilson disease (WD), an inherited disorder affecting copper metabolism, is characterized by hepatic cirrhosis and neuronal degeneration, which result from toxic levels of copper that accumulate in the liver and brain, respectively. We reported previously that the 1.3-kb promoter of the WD gene contains four metal response elements (MREs). Among the four MREs, MREa plays the most important role in the transcriptional activation of the WD promoter.

Tyrosinase (monophenol,L-DOPA:oxygen oxidoreductase) was isolated from the ink of the squid,Illex argentinus. Squid tyrosinase, termed ST94, was found to occur as a covalently linked homodimeric protein with a molecular mass of 140.2 kDa containing two copper atoms per a subunit. The tyrosinase activity of ST94 was enhanced by proteolysis with trypsin to form a protein, termed ST94t, with a molecular mass of 127.6 kDa.

Hemocyanins are large oligomeric copper-containing pro-teins that serve for the transport of oxygen in many arth-ropod species. While studied in detail in the Chelicerata and Crustacea, hemocyanins had long been considered unnec-essary in the Myriapoda. Here we report the complete molecular structure of the hemocyanin from the common house centipedeScutigera coleoptrata(Myriapoda: Chilo-poda), as deduced from 2D-gel electrophoresis, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, protein and cDNA sequencing, and homology modeling....

The nitrite reductase (Nir) isolated fromPseudomonas chlororaphisDSM 50135 is a blue enzyme, with type 1 and type 2 copper centers, as in all copper-containing Nirs des-cribed so far. For the first time, a direct determination of the reduction potentials of both copper centers in a Cu-Nir was performed: type 2 copper (T2Cu), 172 mV and type 1 copper (T1Cu), 298 mV at pH 7.6.

We have isolated a laccase (lac1) from culture fluid ofVol-variella volvacea, grown in a defined medium containing 150lMCuSO4 , by ion-exchange and gel filtration chroma-tography. Lac1 has a molecular mass of 58 kDa as deter-mined by SDS/PAGE and an isoelectric point of 3.7. Degenerate primers based on the N-terminal sequence of purified lac1 and a conserved copper-binding domain were used to generate cDNA fragments encoding a portion of the lac1 protein and RACE was used to obtain full-length cDNA clones. ...

For bovine serum amine oxidase, two different mechanisms of substrate-induced inactivation have been proposed. One consists of a slow oxidation by H2O2of a conserved residue in the reduced enzyme after the fast turnover phase [Pietr-angeli, P., Nocera, S., Fattibene, P., Wang, X.T., Mondovı`, B. &Morpurgo, L. (2000)Biochem. Biophys. Res. Commun. 267, 174–178] and the other of the oxidation byH2O2of the dihydrobenzoxazole in equilibrium with the product Schiff base, during the catalytic cycle [Lee, Y., Shepard, E., Smith, J., Dooley, D.M. & Sayre, L.M. (2001)Biochemistry40, 822–829]. ...

The sequencing of the genome ofRalstonia solanacearum[Salanoubat M, Genin S, Artiguenave F,et al.(2002) Nature415, 497–502] revealed several genes that putatively code for polyphenol oxidases (PPOs). This soil-borne pathogenic bacterium withers a wide range of plants. We detected the expression of two PPO genes (accession numbers NP_518458 and NP_519622) with high similarity to tyrosinases, both containing the six conserved histidines required to bind the pair of type-3 copper ions at the active site....

CopA, a P-type ATPase transporter involved in copper detoxification in Bacillus subtilis, contains two soluble Atx1-like domains separated by a short linker at its N-terminus, an arrangement that occurs widely in copper transporters from both prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Both domains were previously found to bind Cu(I) with very high affinity.
