Contaminants or commensals

Non fermenter Gram negative bacilli were considered as contaminants or commensals of little significance1. However, recent literature review shows that these organisms are now associated with life-threatening infections such as Septicemia, Pneumonia, Urinary Tract Infection, Meningitis, Surgical Site Infection, Ventilator Associated Pneumonia, Wound Infection, Osteomyelitis etc. Carbapenemases are diverse enzymes that vary in their ability to hydrolyze Carbapenems and other beta lactams.

Accurate identification, isolation and antibiotic sensitivity pattern of non-fermenting gram-negative bacilli (NFGNB) is important for proper patient management. Aim: to find out the prevalence and the antibiotic sensitivity pattern of non- fermenters (NFs). A cross-sectional study was conducted on specimen collected from patients of tertiary care centre and send to microbiology laboratory for culture and sensitivity. Out of 4819 specimens collected in a year, 3363 (69.78%) were found culture positive and among them 378 (7.84%) were positive for NFGNB.

Nonfermentative group of bacteria have been incriminated as emerging opportunistic pathogens, especially from hospital settings due to their increasing frequency of isolation from clinical specimens. Nonfermenters show natural resistance to a wide range of commonly used antibiotics. This study includes 50 isolates of nonfermenters from different clinical specimens like Pus, Sputum, blood and urine obtained from patients attending SVS Medical college & Hospital from Jan 2007 to March 2008. Out of 50 nonfermenters, Pseudomonas sp. (82%), Acinetobacter sp. (14%), Alcaligens sp.
