This study evaluates the effectiveness of using crushed construction and demolition waste as reactive media for applying in Permeable Reactive Barriers to treat contaminated groundwater by landfill leachate. Modern analytical methods such as SEM and EDX were used to analyze the physicochemical properties of crushed demolition waste, demonstrating that the material has a porous structure on the surface that is suitable for the targeted heavy metal adsorption.

In recent several years there were publications of arsenic contamination in groundwater. This event actuated us to study and explain the mechanism of arsenic releasing into groundwater of aquifers under alluvial plains. Understanding of this mechanism could make clear of the relations between solid phase (arsenic-bearing material) and water phase (arsenic dissolvable) in earth crust layers.

It is estimated that approximately one-third of the world’s population are using groundwater for drinking purposes. Pollution of ground water due to industrial effluents is a major issue (Vasanthavigar et al., 2011). Poor groundwater quality brings negative impact to human health and plant growth. In developing countries like India, it is estimated that around 80% of all diseases are directly related to poor drinking water quality and unhygienic conditions (Olajire & Imeokparia, 2001; Vasanthavigar et al., 2011).
