Conventional regressions

The intent of this book is to describe some recent data mining tools that have proven effective in dealing with data sets which often involve uncertain description or other complexities that cause difficulty for the conventional approaches of logistic regression, neural network models, and decision trees. We have organized the material into three parts. Part I introduces concepts. Part II contains chapters on a number of different techniques often used in data mining. Part III focuses on business applications of data mining.

This study documents the impact of price variations in global markets, specifically oil, on stock returns at Pakistan stock exchange (PSX). We select three global markets (oil, gold and currency exchange) and two PSX indices (conventional and Islamic) for a period 2009-2020 to provide evidence. Monthly data for the selected time series is used for analysis. Analysis techniques include descriptive statistics, stationarity testing, Johansen cointegration, correlation and regression analysis.

Uncovered interest rate parity (UIRP) provides a crucial theoretical concept for many models in international finance and international monetary economics. Using quarterly data span from 1998Q1 to 2010Q3, we run conventional regressions (OLS) and simple GARCH analysis on UIRP for the case of Malaysia-UK, Malaysia-Japan and Malaysia-Singapore. The empirical results show that these relationships do not support the UIRP in all cases. We, therefore, cannot reject the validity of UIRP violation such as in widely documented literature reviews.

A quantitative structure–activity relationship (QSAR) study was carried out on 112 anticancer compounds to develop a robust model for the prediction of anti-leukemia activity (pGI50) against MOLT-4 and P388 leukemia cell lines. The Genetic algorithm (GA) and multiple linear regression analysis (MLRA) were used to select the descriptors and to generate the correlation models that relate the structural features to the biological activities. The final equations consist of 15 and 10 molecular descriptors calculated using the paDEL molecular descriptor software.

Canadian provincial governments have made significant investments in nurse advice telephone lines and Internet resources as non-traditional options to reduce emergency department visits and improve access to health care for the population. However, little is known about the characteristics of users of these services, and who chooses to use them first, before accessing other sources of health advice. Additionally, individuals with lower levels of education tend to be late adopters of technology and have inconsistent utilization of health services.

Conventional wisdom is that an increase in the target Fed funds rate leads to an imme- diate increase in market interest rates, and a fall in bond prices; yet evidence for this view is elusive. Cook and Hahn (1989) documented a strong response in the 1970s, but regressions using data from the 1980s and 1990s show little, if any, impact of Fed policy on interest rates. Roley and Sellon (1995), for example, conclude that “although casual observation suggests a close connection:::, the relationship between Fed actions and long-term interest rates appears much looser and more variable.
