Ebook "The siamese-twin porphyrin and its copper and nickel complexes: A non-innocent twist" describes the first and long-sought successful synthesis of a new pyrazole-expanded porphyrin, a higher analog of porphyrin. This "Siamese-Twin Porphyrin" provides two conjoined porphyrin-like coordination spheres, thus being able to accommodate two metal ions within the same ligand.

Comparative assessment of antibacterial and antifungal activities of metallic ion based formulations
The present study aims to investigate the potential of the new formulations including silver (I) nanoparticles as well as copper (II) and zinc (II) chelates in their separated and complex forms in the treatment of infectious diseases. The capacity of metallic ion based systems to suppress the development of microorganism often seen on wounds, such as Gram-negative bacteria (Klebsiella pneumonia ATCC 700603, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853), Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213), and fungi (Candida albicans ATCC 10231) were evaluated by microdilution assay.

Two copper phyllosilicates were prepared via co-precipitation accompanied by hydrothermal treatment at pH constant. The obtained materials were physically characterized by XRD, H2-TPR, TEM, BET and XPS techniques. The results indicated that Cu(II) ions were successfully intercalated into the phyllosilicate framework at a low Cu/Si molar ratio.

Electroactive poly(1,8-diaminonaphthalene) is known to have a high affinity for metal ions thanks to amine and imine groups in the polymer chain. However, electrochemical sensors based on pristine P(1,8-DAN) have a major drawback concerning its poor electrical conductivity.

The adsorption of Cu(II) ions from aqueous solution onto alginic acid has been investigated based on the establishment of a relationship among pH, conductivity and the concentration of metal ion. It was shown that the adsorption of this metal ion onto alginic acid followed the pseudo-second-order reaction and was conducted by ion exchange mechanism.

For more than five decades, dithizone has been widely used as an analytical reagent. This ligand forms strongly colored complexes with metal ions and this ability to form complexes can be used for extraction/removal of certain metal ions in addition to analytical determination. In static mode, the supercritical carbon dioxide extraction of copper and lead ions from aqueous solutions after complexation by the dithizone ligand is studied (at two different conditions: a) p = 120 bar, T = 30 °C, and b) p = 72 bar, T = 50 °C).

In this study, the noncompetitive and competitive adsorption process of copper (II) and nickel (II) ions on the natural zeolite were examined in simulated wastewater in a batch system with respect to concentration, pH and temperature. Optimum pH values were found as 5,0 for adsorption of copper and nickel ions on the zeolite. The effect of initial concentration and ambient temperature on the yield of adsorption was examined at this pH value.

Chemical absorption of CO2 into aqueous amine solutions using a nonstirred bubble column was experimentally investigated. The performance of CO2 absorption of four different primary and secondary amines including monoethanolamine (MEA), piperazine (PZ), 2-piperidineethanol (2PE), and homopiperazine (HPZ) were compared. The effects of initial concentration of amine, the inlet mole fraction of CO2 , and solution temperature on the rate of CO2 absorption and CO2 loading (mol CO2 /mol amine) were studied in the range of 0.02–1 M, 0.10–0.15, and 25–40 °C, respectively.

We produced and characterized copper(II)-chitosan complexes fabricated via in-situ precipitation as antibioticfree antibacterial biomaterials. Copper was bound to chitosan from a dilute acetic acid solution of chitosan and copper(II) chloride exploiting the ability of the polysaccharide to chelate metal ions.

The preconcentration of metal ions present at low concentration levels in aqueous systems and the selective removal of potentially toxic metals are important applications of adsorption processes. In this study, a heptadentate dinucleating ligand was anchored to chitosan for use in adsorption studies on Zn(II), Cu(II) and Ni(II) ions.

The present study includes important findings relating to the number of donor atoms, species of ligands, and stabilities of complexes. Stabilities of complexes between Cu(II) ion and NO-, NS-, ONS-, and ONO-type Schiff bases were compared. Acid-base properties of the Schiff bases were explained at 25±0.1◦C and ionic strength (I) of 0.1 M supported by NaCl. The Hyperquad computer program was used for calculation of dissociation and stability constants.

A complete liquid phase technology and a function regulator were applied to prepare CuZnAl catalysts for higher alcohol synthesis. Characterizations showed that the introduction of the function regulator can change the reduction ability of copper oxides and the surface basicity of catalysts. Activity tests indicated that the selectivity of higher alcohol is high when considerable medium-strong basicity and the synergistic effects of copper ion and metal copper exist on the catalytic surface.

A series of batch lab-scale experiments were performed to investigate the performance of dead phosphorylated algal biomass of Spirogyra species for the bioadsorption of Cu +2 ions from aqueous solutions. FT-IR and SEM analyses were performed to characterize the phosphorylated and raw algae. The SEM analysis indicated that the phosphorus content increases by about 5 times. The isotherm equilibrium data indicated that phosphorylation enhances the removal of Cu +2 from water by about 20%. The experimental isotherms fit well to Langmuir models with R 2 values close to 0.99.

The aqua-bis(ethylenediamine)-chloro-copper(II) chloride complex, [Cu(en)2(H2O)(Cl)]Cl (1), was synthesized by direct interaction of CuCl2 ×2H2O with pepa (pepa is a polyethylenepolyamine containing ethylenediamine (en)). The crystalline complex 1 was characterized by IR spectra and structurally studied. Crystals of this complex consist of the [Cu(en)2(H2O)(Cl)]+ discrete cations, whose Cu2+ ion is chelated by two en molecules.

A general synthetic method was improved to synthesize a chemosensor based on a tripodal Bodipy (t-BODIPY) structure. The product and its intermediate products were successfully prepared and fully characterized. The metal ion sensing performance of the tripodal compound was evaluated by UV/Vis and fluorescence spectroscopies. According to the obtained data, t-BODIPY is a selective and sensitive fluorescence probe for detection of Cu2+ ions in the presence and in the absence of competing ions. This chemosensor presents relatively a low detection limit of 5.4 x10–7 M for Cu2+.

Adsorption of Cu(II) ions and alizarin red S (ARS) has been studied using beads of chitosan (CS) and a chitosan/ZnO nanorod composite (CS-ZnO) in single and binary systems. The beads were synthesized and characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray analysis.

The combination of potentiometric methods with multivariate calibration techniques allows complex mixtures to be analyzed. In this study, a new method was developed and reported for simultaneous determination of copper(II) and zinc(II) cations in a mixture by titrimetric methods. The developed method permits simultaneous cation analysis with low detection limits, just by using a pH electrode. This work has achieved the challenging goal of developing a cost-effective and applicable method that can be applied in most laboratories due to independence of any chemical instruments.

Four metallo (zinc, copper, vanadyl, and indium) phthalocyanine derivatives bearing four aliphatic (hexylthio) groups were prepared from corresponding phthalonitrile compounds. The metallophthalocyanines were characterized with ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and mass and elemental analyses techniques. Aggregation properties of metallophthalocyanines in solution were studied in varied concentration ranges. Thin films of metallophthalocyanines were obtained by spin coating technique.
