Coreference annotation

Coreference resolution is the task of finding strings in text that have the same referent as other strings. Failures of coreference resolution are a common cause of false negatives in information extraction from the scientific literature.

This paper tackles the problem of coreference resolution in Vietnamese EMRs. Unlike in English ones, in Vietnamese clinical texts, verbs are often used to describe disease symptoms. So we first define rules to annotate verbs as mentions and consider coreference between verbs and other noun or adjective mentions possible.

We compare the impact of sentenceinternal vs. sentence-external features on word order prediction in two generation settings: starting out from a discriminative surface realisation ranking model for an LFG grammar of German, we enrich the feature set with lexical chain features from the discourse context which can be robustly detected and reflect rough grammatical correlates of notions from theoretical approaches to discourse coherence. We extend the original entity-based coherence model (Barzilay and Lapata, 2008) by learning from more fine-grained coherence preferences in training data. We associate multiple ranks with the set of permutations originating from the same source document, as opposed to the original pairwise rankings. We also study the effect of the permutations used in training, and the effect of the coreference component used in entity extraction.

We present an implemented machine learning system for the automatic detection of nonreferential it in spoken dialog. The system builds on shallow features extracted from dialog transcripts. Our experiments indicate a level of performance that makes the system usable as a preprocessing filter for a coreference resolution system. We also report results of an annotation study dealing with the classification of it by naive subjects.

We present our work on information extraction from multiple, multi-lingual sources for the Multimedia Indexing and Searching Environment (MUMIS), a project aiming at developing technology to produce formal annotations about essential events in multimedia programme material. The novelty of our approach consists on the use of a merging or cross-document coreference algorithm that aims at combining the output delivered by the information extraction systems.

We propose the PlayCoref game, whose purpose is to obtain substantial amount of text data with the coreference annotation. We provide a description of the game design that covers the strategy, the instructions for the players, the input texts selection and preparation, and the score evaluation.

This paper explores the effect that different corpus configurations have on the performance of a coreference resolution system, as measured by MUC, B3 , and CEAF. By varying separately three parameters (language, annotation scheme, and preprocessing information) and applying the same coreference resolution system, the strong bonds between system and corpus are demonstrated.
