Cormel production

The plants were planting at a distance of 30x20 cm. Observations were recorded on various vegetative growth, corm and cormels yield attributes and data were analyzed statistically.

The present experiment was conducted to standardize the protocol for in vitro mutagenesis of gladiolus hybridus varieties ‘Punjab Glance’ and ‘Sylvia’. The nodal buds were irradiated with different doses of gamma rays (Co60) 0, 5, 8, 10 and 12 Gy. Irradiated explants were then cultured aseptically on MS basal medium supplemented with 5 mg/l (BAP) + 2mg/l (IBA) and agar-agar to induce shoot and root proliferation.

The present investigation entitled, “Suitability of Cut Corms as Planting Material on Flowering, Corm and Cormel Production in Gladiolus (Gladiolus grandiflorus L.) Varieties” was under taken in the Department of Horticulture, Naini Agricultural Institute, Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology and Sciences, Allahabad during Rabi season (2016-2017).

The present work entitled as Effect of substitution of nutritional source through organics and bio-inputs on corm and cormel production in gladiolus (Gladiolus grandiflorus L.) cv. American Beauty was carried out at the college farm, Horticultural College and Research Institute, Venkataramannagudem. The corm and cormel characters were significantly influenced by different nutritional sources.

Colocasia [Colocasia esculenta var. antiquorum (L.) schott.], which is also known as Taro, Arvi, Katchu and eddode belongs to the family Aracea is an important edible aroid. Africa ranks first in area and production of colocasia and in India colocasia is favourite among Gujarat, Konkan region of Maharashtra and several other parts of south India. The corm and cormels are the major economic parts of Arvi. Corms of colocasia are rich in carbohydrate and protein and nearly one and half time more nutritious than potato.

Gladiolus (family Iridaceae) is one of the most important bulbous flower crops due to its long attractive spike with variety of colours, prolonged vase life and its ability to withstand long distance transportation. The role of growth regulators in growth & flowering of gladiolus has received considerable attention recently though very little work has been done on this aspect, hence the present study was under taken. The experiment was conducted in the experimental area of the Department of Horticulture consisting of four concentrations of GA3 (25, 50, 75, & 100 ppm).

Gladiolus (Gladiolus hybrida) is an important ornamental plant cultivated world over for its attractive spikes. The commercial cultivation of Gladiolus is based on natural multiplication of corms and cormels. In vitro propagation techniques, is superior to conventional propagation and produces disease free plants in huge quantities. In vitro regeneration of gladiolus cultivars, Sylvia, White Prosperity and Amsterdam was achieved using shoot bud of cormels as an explant. Sylvia variety recorded the best for callus induction and regeneration than other two varieties.

Four different varieties of Gladiolus (V1-American Beauty, V2-Pacifica, and V3- Summer Pearl and V4-Single Jester) with uniform size of corms were taken for assessing the effect of four concentrations of GA3 (25, 50, 75 and 100 ppm) on cormel production. The experiment was conducted in Factorial Randomized Block Design. Un-treated control was also maintained.
