Corneal scrapings were collected

The aim of the study is to isolate the bacteria and fungi causing keratitis in and around the Nellore district and to do antibiotic sensitivity testing especially to identify the MDR strains. Corneal scrapings were collected from 150 patients who attended to the department of Ophthalmology, Narayana Medical College, Nellore during the period February 2016 to December 2016 with corneal ulcers.

Corneal blindness is responsible for 1.5 to 2 million new cases of monocular blindness every year in which ocular trauma and corneal ulceration are significant contributors. Corneal infections of fungal etiology are common in India (19-45%). Aspergillus (16– 53%) and Fusarium (10–45%) species are the common pathogens. Purpose: 1.To Identify and isolate the various fungi causing fungal keratitis. 2. To know the usefulness of Gram stain, KOH wet mount and fungal culture in identification of fungi. The eye may be infected from external sources or through intraocular invasion of microorganisms carried by the blood stream. The common eye infections caused by bacterial and fungal pathogens are blepharitis, conjunctivitis, internal and external hordeolum, keratitis, dacryocystitis. Timely institution of appropriate therapy must be initiated to control the infections and thereby minimize the ocular morbidity.
