Krüppel-type zinc finger genes (ZNF) constitute a large yet relatively poorly characterized gene family. ZNF genes encode proteins that recognize specific DNA motifs in gene promotors. They act as transcriptional co-activators or -repressors via interaction with chromatin remodeling proteins and other transcription factors.

A third criterion for effective research on skills transfer is study over time. To be certain that students are transferring skills from their first language rather than using skills learned in their second language, researchers must study subjects who have received reading instruction in their first language prior to receiving it in their second language, and who have received sufficient first-language instruction to have developed a base of first-language skills that can be transferred.

Use of vocabulary is an important aspect of academic writing. Again, following Storch and Tapper (2009), we examined the occurrences of vocabulary in the Academic Word List (AWL) developed by Coxhead (2000). The AWL consists of 570 word families derived from a corpus of academic texts drawn from our ‘sub- corpora’ from arts, commerce, law, and science (see Coxhead, 2000 for details). These words are academic words that are found across disciplines and comprise 9-10% of an academic text (Storch & Tapper, 2009).

For development purposes we are using an existing corpus of i0,000 words of continuous prose from the PERQ's graphics documentation; in the long term, the system will be extended for use by technical writers in fields other than software, and possibly to other languages.

The UCREL team at the University of Lancaster is engaged in the development of a robust parsing mechanism, which will assign the appropriate grammatical structure to sentences in unconstrained English text. The techniques used involve the calculation of probabilities for competing structures, and are based on the techniques successfully used in tagging (i.e. assigning grammatical word classes) to the LOB (Lancaster-Oslo/Bergen) corpus.

Work at the Unit for Computer Research on the Eaglish Language at the University of Lancaster has been directed towards producing a grammatically snnotated version of the Lancaster-Oslo/ Bergen (LOB) Corpus of written British English texts as the prel~minary stage in developing computer programs and data files for providing a grammatical analysis of -n~estricted English text. From 1981-83, a suite of PASCAL programs was devised to automatically produce a single level of grammatical description with one word tag representing the word class or part of speech of each word token in the corpus.

We present an outline of the genome information acquisition (GENIA) project for automatically extracting biochemical information from journal papers and abstracts. GENIA will be available over the Internet and is designed to aid in information extraction, retrieval and visualisation and to help reduce information overload on researchers. The vast repository of papers available online in databases such as MEDLINE is a natural environment in which to develop language engineering methods and tools and is an opportunity to show how language engineering can play a key role on the Internet. ...
