Correlation neglect

The Leishmaniases are on the top of the global list of tropical neglected diseases. The number of infected dogs in South America is estimated in millions and correlated to disease cases in humans, especially in Brazil. Equines may get infected too and can play a role in the epidemiological chain.

In this paper, a traditional adjoint method is used to propagate ND uncertainty on reactivity and reactivity coefficients and estimate correlations between different states of the core. We show that neglecting those correlations induces a loss of information in the final uncertainty.

For the first time in economic research, the present experimental study confronted participants with the task to predict stock prices ex ante in order to analyze the interrelation of the behavioral anomalies overconfidence and correlation neglect. The study shows that the participants considerably overestimate their accuracy of forecasting (overconfidence). Almost half of all participants (42.2%) disregard the correlation among return developments for different financial instruments (correlation neglect).

Carcinoma of the lung is the most common cause of cancer-related death in men and women. Prognosis correlates strongly with stage of disease at presentation and to some degree with the histological subtype of the tumor. Histological classifications of lung cancer were somewhat arbitrary and a matter of convenience. However, multiple lines of differentiation are often found within a single tumor, if it is sufficiently sampled.

Correlation Our study of signal processing systems has been dominated by the concept of ‘convolution’, and we have somewhat neglected its close relative the ‘correlation’. While formally similar (in fact convolution by a symmetric FIR filter can be considered a correlation as well), the way one should think about the two is different. Convolution is usually between a signal and a filter; we think of it as a system with a single input and stored coefficients.
