Reniform nematode (Rotylenchulus reniformis) has emerged as one of the most destructive root pathogens of upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) in the United States. Management of R. reniformis has been hindered by the lack of resistant G. hirsutum cultivars; however, resistance has been frequently identified in germplasm accessions from the G. arboreum collection.

Male sterility is an efficient trait for hybrid seed production and germplasm innovation. Until now, most studies on male sterility were on cytoplasmic and recessive genic sterility, with few on dominant genic male sterility, especially in cotton, due to lack of such mutant.

The present investigation studied genetic diversity of ninety four cotton germplasm accessions, in order to improve genetic base of the present cultivars. Out of 48 primer pairs surveyed, 20 (42%) were showing polymorphism. The average number of alleles per locus was 2.45.

A total of one hundred and sixty germplasm accessions of Gossypium barbadense were evaluated for sixteen traits to assess their per se performance, variability, heritability, genetic advance, correlation and path analysis. The analysis of variance had shown significant differences between the genotypes for all the traits indicating the presence of sufficient variability in the experimental material.

Our objective was to evaluate G. hirsutum cotton lines, which includes indigenous, exotic collection, released varieties and lines developed from different breeding strategies were evaluated in alpha lattice designs with two replications along with five standard G. hirsutum check varieties viz., Sahana, Surabhi, MCU 5, DS 28 and ARBH 813 for yield and fibre quality traits.

Geographically and phenotypically diverse 860 G. hirsutum germplasm lines were evaluated under North Zone irrigated conditions of India during 2011-12 and 2012-13 for a different flower retention period, seed cotton yield and other desirable traits. The accessions initiate flowering at 60 days were having maturity period below 150 days, horizontal width less than 40 cm, hence showed suitability for high density cropping system (HDPS) for productivity enhancement. The accessions which flowers at 80 days are found to be semi spreading in nature.

Cotton is king of fibre crops and has economic importance worldwide and new cultivars have to be released continuously to meet the demanding needs of economic market. To meet our requirement broad genetic base is needed which is limited due to continuous usage of common parents for crossing. So the germplasm, advanced breeding lines are to be characterised for variable characters. DUS characters listed by PPV FRA, New Delhi were used for this purpose. The field studies were carried out during kharif 2017-18 at RARS, Lam.

Fifty cotton genotypes were investigated for variability and genetic divergence regarding yield related attributes, seed cotton yield and fibre quality traits using principle component analysis. Eleven traits viz., days to flowering, plant height (cm), no of sympodia/plant, no of bolls, boll weight (g/plant), seed cotton yield (kg/ha), Micronnaire value, % Span length, Uniformity ratio, Bundle strength (g/tex) and Elongation ratio were recorded for the germplasm accessions. Maximum variation of about 17.

The working group of G. hirsutum germplasm accessions was characterized for Distinctiveness, Uniformity and Stability testing. Subsequent analysis of data was done to study the genetic diversity available among the accessions using principal component and clustering of 320 cotton germplasm. Under field and laboratory, 26 qualitative traits and 14 quantitative traits were recorded. There is no variation observed for gossypol glands, anther filament colour, male sterility, boll bearing habit and boll opening.

To the extent of our knowledge, applications of DNA markers in marker-assisted breeding of cotton are handicapped due to low genetic diversity in cotton germplasm. Cotton leaf curl disease, a disease of viral origin, has substantially depressed cotton production in Pakistan, and this disease is also an emerging threat to the neighboring cotton-growing countries like China and India.
