Cotton heterosis
-
Heterosis, a multigenic complex trait extrapolated as sum total of many phenotypic features, is widely utilized phenomenon in agricultural crops for about a century. It is mainly focused on establishing vigorous cultivars with the fact that its deployment in crops necessitates the perspective of genomic impressions on prior selection for metric traits. In spite of extensive investigations, the actual mysterious genetic basis of heterosis is yet to unravel. Contemporary crop breeding is aimed at enhanced crop production overcoming former achievements.

Quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping provides a powerful tool to unravel the genetic bases of cotton yield and its components, as well as their heterosis. In the present study, the genetic basis underlying inbreeding depression and heterosis for yield and yield components of upland cotton was investigated in recombinant inbred line (RIL), immortalized F2 (IF2), and two backcross (BCF1) populations based on a high-density SNP linkage map across four environments.

The study was undertaken to evaluate the magnitude of heterosis in 36 cotton hybrids developed by crossing 3 lines and 12 testers in L x T design at three different locations of Maharashtra State viz., Akola, Amravati and Nagpur during kharif, 2017-18. The cross AKH 8828 x AKH 9916 exhibited highest and significant heterosis over the check PKV Hy-2 for seed cotton yield/plant (60.30 %), number of bolls/plant (23.55 %) and fibre strength (10.43 %) across the environments.

Heterosis breeding is the most useful method for yield increase around the globe. Heterosis is an intriguing process to develop superior offspring to either parent in the desired character. The biomass vigor produced during seedling emergence stage has a direct influence on yield heterosis in plants. Unfortunately, the genetic basis of early biomass vigor in cotton is poorly understood.

Cotton is an important fiber crop but has serious heterosis effects, and cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) is the major cause of heterosis in plants. However, to the best of our knowledge, no studies have investigated CMS Yamian A in cotton with the genetic background of Australian wild Gossypium bickii. Conjoint transcriptomic and proteomic analysis was first performed between Yamian A and its maintainer Yamian B.

The present investigation was carried out during 2012-13 at ARS, Siruguppa with an objective of determine the extent of commercial Heterosis for fiber quality traits in F1 hybrids obtained by crossing 10 parents in half dialle fashion. Several hybrid combinations showed very good per se performance for all the traits under study and commercial Heterosis for 2.5% span length. These lines can sever as a potential donor for genetic improvement of cotton after further evaluation, fixation and selection.
