We present a novel low-power architecture for the generation of multilevel pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-4) signal generation. A new structure of a micro-ring resonator based on a 44 MMI (Multimode interference) coupler is proposed to control the coupling coefficient and Fano shapes.

We study the cascaded plasmon resonant field enhancement in core-shell nanoparticles using the coupled dipole method. It is found that internal field inside protein-conjugated gold nanoparticles remains constant for large wavelengths of light but is significantly enhanced at 5944 nm due to the screening from the protein shell.

A low field benchtop electron spin resonance (ESR) (also referred to as electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR)) spectrometer is used to reveal paramagnetic centres such as oxygen vacancies and Ti+3 centres over 0.5%Pd/TiO2 . The measurement was performed at room temperature after the sample was reduced in situ under mild hydrogen pressures and evacuated to P < 10–6 Torr.

The new complexes (1–3) were characterized by elemental analysis and spectroscopic methods and the molecular structure of 1a was determined by X-ray diffraction studies. These complexes were applied in the Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling reaction of phenylboronic acid with aryl halides in neat water. The activities of catalysts were monitored by gas chromatography–flame ionization detector and nuclear magnetic resonance.

Schiff base derivatives NBAR and NSAR were developed for selective detection of Al3+ in aqueous solution. UV-vis spectroscopic studies revealed that NBAR and NSAR showed marked sensitivity and selectivity to Al3+ in acetonitrile (ACN)/water (v/v, 1:1, pH 6.80). The NBAR and NSAR receptors bound Al3+ in a 2:1 stoichiometry with apparent binding constants 4.09 × 10 11 M−2 and 1.65 × 10 12 M−2, respectively. They also displayed distinct changes in color upon the alteration of free Al3+ levels in solution with reversible responses and showed little interference with other metal ions.

The synthesis of 3 benzimidazole-based ionic Pd(II)-NHC complexes (NHC:N -heterocyclic carbene) is presented. The structures of the complexes are as follows: [NHC-PdBr3]−[NHC]+. The ionic palladium(II)-NHC complexes were synthesized in high yields and were fully characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, LC-MS/MS, and elemental analysis. These complexes have been identified as active catalysts in Suzuki–Miyaura reactions in a solution of 2-propanol and water at room temperature for different aryl bromides.

Three new dibenzimidazolium salts bridged by 2-methylenepropane-1,3-diyl group were synthesized. Their dinuclear N-heterocyclic carbene Ag(I) complexes were prepared by the reactions of these salts with Ag2 O. The structures of the synthesized compounds were defined by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), elemental analysis, and LC-MSMS (for complexes) techniques. Stability of the silver complexes was confirmed by 1H NMR spectroscopy.

The proposed system is composed of two symmetric disk-pair layers, called the disk-pair dimer, that exhibited two identical but coupled magnetic resonances at the same frequency. This unique design allows to absorb the electromagnetic energy at the transmission mode, which is rarely achieved in the conventional modes. By optimizing the coupling strength between two disk-pair layers, a total absorptivity could be enhanced up to 90%.
