This work aims at investigating the effect of aleatoric uncertainty of creep rock properties on the stability of an underground structure. This uncertainty relates to the spatial variability of the mechanical parameters representing the time-dependent behavior of geological rock formation due to the change in its mineralogy.

This study investigates the time-dependent deformation of FRC beams under loading level Ps/P0 greater than 80% (Ps is the load at reloading and P0 is the load before unloading) with various aggregate sizes by using both the classical macroscopic measurement and the digital image correlation analysis (DIC).

The finite element analysis greatly enhances the understanding of the observations while the measurements give the finite element analysis substance. A full-scale test embankment reinforced with Tenax TT 201 polymer geogrids and weathered Bangkok clay as backfill material has been carried out. Finite element method has been employed to reanalyze all the measured data from the above test embankment. The agreement between the finite element results and the field data is quite good. The results indicate that the overconsolidation ratios affect much on the consolidation settlement.

Heat stress is the primary abiotic stress limiting growth of cool-season grass species. The objective of this study was to determine molecular factors and metabolic pathways associated with superior heat tolerance in thermal bentgrass (Agrostis scabra) by comparative analysis of transcriptomic profiles with its co-generic heat-sensitive species creeping bentgrass (A. stolonifera).

In this study, a feed-forward back-propagation Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is used to predict the stress relaxation and behavior of creep for bimaterial microcantilever beam for sensing device. Results obtained from ANSYS® 8.1 finite element (FE) simulations, which show good agreement with experimental work [1], is used to train the neural network. Parametric studies are carried out to analyze the effects of creep on the microcantilever beam in term of curvature and stress developed with time.

The authors have carried out studies on long term behavior of concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) column by numerical methods based on experimental data that is described by a visco-elastic model, and the age-adjusted effective modulus (AAEM) method is adopted to modelling creep behavior of the concrete core, which is evaluated by the Finite Element Method (FEM) combined Prony's series interpolation by using ANSYS software.

This study suggests that the compatibility of the high temperature irradiationinduced strains (axial growth and creep) between zircaloy and the coating layer and the capability to undergo plastic strain should be taken as key metrics, along with the traditional focus on chemical protectiveness.

The distribution of lateral hydraulic forces within the core row is estimated based on a two-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics model with porous media, assuming symmetric or asymmetric core inlet and outlet flow profiles. The influence of the creep rate on the bow amplitude is tested based on different creep models for guide tubes and fuel rods. Different FA initial states are considered: fresh FAs or FAs with higher burnup, which may be initially straight or exhibit an initial bow from previous cycles.

The constitutive law of plastic deformation expresses the effects of material behavior and properties for stress analysis in the design of manufacturing technology and product service behavior, for materials testing, and for the maintenance of structural and machine components. The book represents the state of the art, but the editors do not rule out other concepts of constitutive laws. There are many different facets of the same problem and as many answers; the right one is the one that gives the most practical solution, the one that best serves the specific problem....

Creep phenomena have so far been investigated only in terms of old- style technology. For a number of decades, the usual way of tackling similar problems was to apply simple and exact tests (e.g. tensile tests) to the very complex and impure materials used in industry and then to subject the results of these tests to a subtle mathematical analysis. As to the prospects of this way of proceeding, we need only to realize that a piece of iron is far more complicated a structure than, for example, a watch.

It is now three years since Elsevier Science published the first book of Failure Analysis Case Studies selected fiom volumes 1,2 and 3 of the journal Engineering Failure Analysis. The book has proved to be a sought-after and widely used source of reference material to help people avoid or analyse engineering failures, design and manufacture for greater safety and economy, and assess operating, maintenance and fitness-for-purpose procedures.

The result of applying a stress is a strain. There are many types of strain, developed for specific problems. ˙ deforms the sample at a constant strain rate, g , and measures the stress with a load cell resulting a stress (y-axis)–strain (x-axis) curve. Alternatively, we could apply a constant stress as fast as possible and watch the material deform under that load. This is the classical engineering creep experiment. If we also watch what happens when that stress is removed, we have the creep–recovery experiment (Figure 2.3b). These experiments complement DMA and are discussed in Chapter 3.
