Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a serious public health problem in the world and its treatment is still a major therapy challenge. Thiazolidinediones (TZDs) are a class of antidiabetic drugs that are used widely to increase insulin sensitivity by activating PeroxisomeProliferator-Activated-Receptor-gamma (PPARγ). Activated PPARγ makes critical alterations in the transcription of genes that regulate glucose and lipid metabolism. However, TZDs have side effects, such as weight gain, edema, congestive heart failure, and bone fracture.

Molecular methods that enable the detection of antimicrobial resistance determinants are critical surveillance tools that are necessary to aid in curbing the spread of antibiotic resistance.
