Ebook "Crop systems biology: Narrowing the gaps between crop modelling and genetics" will be meant for those scientists and graduate students from fundamental plant biology and applied crop science who are interested in bridging the gap between these two fields. We have invited a group of scientists (who have very good track records in publishing excellent papers in this field or in a closely related area) to contribute chapters to this new book, and they have agreed to do so.

Ebook "Seed biology and yield of grain crops (2nd edition)" of an established title examines the determination of grain crop yield from a unique perspective, by concentrating on the influence of the seed itself. As the food supply for an expanding world population is based on grain crops harvested for their seeds, understanding the process of seed growth and its regulation is crucial to our efforts to increase production and meet the needs of that population.

The cyclic nucleotide-gated ion channel (CNGC) family affects the uptake of cations, growth, pathogen defence, and thermotolerance in plants. However, the systematic identification, origin and function of this gene family has not been performed in Brassica oleracea, an important vegetable crop and genomic model organism.

Cytochrome P450 (P450) is a functionally diverse and multifamily class of enzymes which catalyses vast variety of biochemical reactions. P450 genes play regulatory role in growth, development and secondary metabolite biosynthesis. Solanum lycopersicum L. (Tomato) is an economically important crop plant and model system for various studies with massive genomic data.

Drought is one of the major environmental stresses resulting in a huge reduction in crop growth and biomass production. Pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum L.) has excellent drought tolerance, and it could be used as a model plant to study drought resistance.

Predictive models for the rice crop (Oryza sativa L.) of Chhattisgarh plain and its constituent districts have been made. Models have been fitted for the area, productivity and production of the crop separately for above region. Based on these models prediction of area productivity and production of rice have been made year wise between 1998-99 to 2013-14.

Agriculture in Odisha during rabi season is based mainly on pulse crops. The economic reforms in the 1991-92, affected the agriculture scenario of Odisha following which our study period (1970-71 to 2013-14) has been divided into pre-reform (1970-71 to 1991-92) and post reform (1992-93 to 2013-14) period.

Time series and cross section data related to area, production and yield of major crops were collected from published reports of Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare and North East Council, Government of India. Similarly secondary data on livestock products for NER states were collected from the same source. This paper annual compound growth rates were estimated for various crops and livestock products by fitting a log linear regression model.

The major threat of the agricultural crop is the climate change, which grown globally in the subtropical and the tropical regions. Negative impact on the plant growth, development and the economic yield regarding climate change due to consequences of the draught stress. For the prediction of the climate change and occurrence of the draught many simulation models were recorded, it’s very necessary to improve the crop against the draught stress which ultimately limits the production and the productivity of the crop.

Temperature rise due to climate change is expected to change pathogenicity of the pathogen. Temperature has a significant influence on growth and sporulation of rice leaf blast pathogen (M. oryzae). Both growth and sporulation were increased up to a temperature (27°C) and declined further in response to increased or decreased with temperature (32°C and 22°C). Various components of rice blast infection observed maximum at 27°C (optimal temperature) compared to suboptimal (22°C) and supraoptimal (32°C) i.e.

Parameter estimation in statistical modelling plays a crucial role in the real world phenomena. Several alternative analyses may be required for the purpose. An attempt has been made in this paper to estimate the yield of wheat crop using principal components of the weather parameters spread over the crop growth period. Principal component analysis has been used for the purpose of developing zonal yield forecast models because of multicollinearity present among weather variables.

A field experiment was conducted during Kharif 2011 to generate the ground truth data of maize crop at Crop Research Station Bahraich of N.D.U.A&T, Kumarganj, Faizabad (U.P.) as to assess the “Evaluation of the DSSAT Crop Growth Model with Maize (Zea mays L.) Cultivars Validated for NEPZ Region of Eastern U.P.” The experiment was conducted in Split Plot Design. The treatment comprised of three dates of sowing viz. 20th June (D1), 30th June (D2) and 10th July 2011 (D3) kept as main plot with three varieties viz. Seed Tech -940 (V1), ProAgro-4212 (V2) and HQPM-1 (V3) kept as sub plot.

A wheat growth model that includes the direct responses of canopy photosynthesis and transpiration to elevated CO2, and the response of crop growth to water stress has been developed and tested. Sensitivity analyses show that different cultivars have quite different responses to changes in ambient air temperature, ambient CO2 concentration and rainfall. Because crops reach maturity earlier under higher temperature, an increase of 3 oC may not impose further water stress to growth of a wheat crop.

Infiltration is a dynamic process, variable in time and space and plays a vital role in the replenishment of soil water which is responsible for the growth and development of crops. Modelling of infiltration equation involves in finding out coefficients in the expressions for the curves infiltration rate and accumulated infiltration verses time and other parameters. The present study is aimed at determining the best fit infiltration model.
