Crop growth of pearl millet

Drought is one of the major environmental stresses resulting in a huge reduction in crop growth and biomass production. Pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum L.) has excellent drought tolerance, and it could be used as a model plant to study drought resistance.

Pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum) is a cereal crop that possesses the ability to withstand drought, salinity and high temperature stresses. The NAC [NAM (No Apical Meristem), ATAF1 (Arabidopsis thaliana Activation Factor 1), and CUC2 (Cup-shaped Cotyledon)] transcription factor family is one of the largest transcription factor families in plants. NAC family members are known to regulate plant growth and abiotic stress response.

Heat and drought are serious threats for crop growth and development. As the sixth largest cereal crop in the world, pearl millet can not only be used for food and forage but also as a source of bioenergy. Pearl millet is highly tolerant to heat and drought.

Keeping these facts in view, in the present investigation we screened the endophytic bacteria for their effect on growth of pearl millet crop under water stress conditions. The endophytic bacteria were then evaluated for their effect on seed germination, seedling vigour under osmotic stress conditions. Our outcome suggests that endophytic bacteria can be used in agriculture to reduce water stress in plants in an eco-friendly manner.

Pearlmillet (Pennisetum glaucum L.) is largely grown for grain and fodder purpose under those situations where other crops generally fail. Pearlmillet as a food crop is limited to the developing countries in Asia, and particularly in Africa and ranked sixth in the world followed by rice, wheat, maize, barley and sorghum (Anonymous, 2010-11).

Integration of chemical fertilizer with organic manures has been found quite promising not only in sustaining the soil health and productivity but also in stabilizing the crop production in comparison to the use of each component, separately (Nambiar and Abrol, 1992).

A field experiment was carried out in Kharif season (2014-15 and 2015-16) at College Farm, College of Agriculture, Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University (PJTSAU), Rajendranagar, Hyderabad, India, to evaluate the effect of sowing dates and integrated nutrition on growth and productivity of kharif pearlmillet. Experimental results revealed that pearl millet crop, out of the three INM main treatments, 100 % RDF + press mud @ 2.5 tons ha-1 i.e., M3 and among dates of sowing, pearl millet sown on June 30th (D2) improved the growth parameters viz.

A field experiment was conducted in split plot design with three replications, during rainy seasons of 2016 and 2017 at Rajasthan Agriculture Research Institute, Durgapura to study the growth, productivity and economics of fenugreek - pearl millet cropping system by using four levels of phosphorus (0, 20, 40 and 60 kg P2O5/ha) and six treatments of zinc and zinc solubilizer [0, 2.5 and 5.0 kg Zn/ha, zinc solubilizer (Bacillus endophyticus), 2.5 kg Zn/ha + zinc solubilizer and 5 kg Zn/ha + zinc solubilizer] applied to fenugreek.

Pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum L.) is an important food and forage crop. It is locally known as bajra, combo, sajja, bari, ganti or kambam. Leaf spot disease of pearl millet is a common foliar disease caused by Drechslera setariae. A laboratory experiment was conducted to study the antifungal activity of four biocontrol agents viz., Trichoderma harzianum, Trichoderma viride, Pseudomonas fluorescens and Bacillus subtilis against Drechslera setariae employing dual culture technique. All the biocontrol agents checked the growth of the Drechslera setariae as compared to control.

Plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPB) are plant associated micro-organisms known to induce plant defences and confer beneficial effects such as increased plant growth and low susceptibility to diseases caused by pathogens. Plant growth promoting bacteria are capable of significantly altering the growth phenotype of inoculated plants. Plants inoculated with PGPBs are capable to assimilate minerals and synthesize plant hormones. A total of 46 bacteria isolates were obtained from phyllosphere of different crops (Wheat, Pearl millet, Cotton, Mungbean and Potato).

The role of Zn as micronutrient in healthy growth of plants is very important. The microorganisms present in phyllospheric environment have capability to increase micronutrient availability to plants. Total forty eight isolates were obtained from five different crops (wheat, mustard, cotton, pearl millet and moong). All isolates were characterized for different plant growth promoting attributes i.e., production of ammonia, IAA, and solubilization of Zinc, Phosphate. Among all isolates total 87.5 % showed IAA and Ammonia production in different range. Total 72.91 % Zn solubalization and 60.

Pearl millet crop suffers from many fungal diseases, among them blast caused by Pyricularia grisea (Cooke) Sacc, is one of the important diseases in recent years. Hence, with a view to generate information on management of disease using chemicals and bio agents. In vitro evaluation of twelve fungicides and six bioagents were carried out against Pyricularia grisea causing blast of pearl millet. Among the systemic fungicides evaluated, Tricyclazole 75% EC inhibited 100 per cent mycelial growth of the pathogen, followed by Carbendazim 50% WP (99.
