Ebook "Seed biology and yield of grain crops (2nd edition)" of an established title examines the determination of grain crop yield from a unique perspective, by concentrating on the influence of the seed itself. As the food supply for an expanding world population is based on grain crops harvested for their seeds, understanding the process of seed growth and its regulation is crucial to our efforts to increase production and meet the needs of that population.

The most important types of abiotic stress that affect agricultural crops throughout the world are drought and salinity. These stresses will continue to worsen as the current climate crisis progresses. Plants have evolved a complex set of mechanisms in order to protect themselves from salt and drought. At the macrobiological level, these include alterations in growth rate, water balance, antioxidant defenses, and photosynthesis.

Fruit set after successful pollination is key for the production of sweet cherries, and a low fruit-setting rate is the main problem in production of this crop. As gibberellin treatment can directly induce parthenogenesis and satisfy the hormone requirement during fruit growth and development, such treatment is an important strategy for improving the fruit-setting rate of sweet cherries.

The study "Biochar mitigates salt stress by regulating nutrient uptake and antioxidant activity, alleviating the oxidative stress and abscisic acid content in cabbage seedlings" was conducted as factorial completely randomized design with two factors; salinity levels (0 and 150 mM NaCl) and biochar doses (weighed at the rate of 0%, 2.5%, and 5% by soil weight). Growth parameters such as stem diameter, leaf area, shoot fresh weight, root fresh weight, shoot dry weight, and root dry weight of cabbage seedlings treated with 150 mM NaCl were lower than the control.

The treatments consisted of two sowing methods (broadcasting and drilling at 30 cm inter-row spacing) and three nitrogen rates (0, 30 and 60 kg N). The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The results obtained showed that plant dry matter was significantly higher in the drilling method of sowing at 6 and 12 weeks after sowing (WAS) and the lowest plant dry matter was recorded in broadcasting in both years of studies.

A field experiment was conducted during kharif season of 2019 at the Crop Research Farm, Department of Agronomy, Naini Agricultural Institute, SHUATS, Prayagraj (U.P.) to evaluate rice (Oryza sativa L.) hybrids under agro-climatic conditions of U.P. The experiment was carried out to find the performance of 10 hybrids, which laid out in Randomized Block Design (RBD) & replicated thrice.

Invasion by alien perennial weed Mikania micrantha has created a serious problems in Southeast Asia. This climbing vine possesses very fast growth rate and could multiply from seed and vegetative parts. It climbs on other plants, create a dense cover and block sunlight thereby damage or kill the other plant. It compete for water, soil nutrient and release allele-chemicals inhibiting growth of plants. The weed creates economic loss to plantation, horticultural crops, displaces and kills native vegetation. It is designated as one of the worst invasive plants of the world. M.

Maize is one of the most important cereal crops in India contributing significantly towards food and nutritional security. The experiment was carried out to study the effect of nitrogen levels and plant growth regulator (PGR) on plant dry weight, crop growth rate (CGR) and yield attributes in maize crop. The experiment was conducted during Rabi season of 2019-20 at Crop Research Farm, Department of Agronomy, Naini Agricultural Institute, SHUATS, Prayagraj (U.P.).

The constraint of labour shortage resulted in modern heavy machineries which form a hard pan on agricultural field. A subsoiler plough is famous for breaking hardpan and working at higher depths. On overview of effects of subsoiler on field is studied. The subsoiler has better performance on improving soil properties such as bulk density, porosity, strength and infiltration rates. The subsoiling also has its effects on root system of plants positively. The crop yields were seen positive or no correlation on subsoiling.

India has virtual monopoly in pigeonpea production accounting to 90% of world’s total production but the average productivity is relatively low due to terminal moisture stress and the production is not adequate to meet the demand of increasing population. To meet the said demand pigeon pea productivity has to be increased. There is a need for judicious management of available water and plant nutrients through different fertilizers to increase the productivity and to reduce the production costs of pigeonpea.

The rate of growth of seedling, the rate of increase of root, shoot, area of the first leaf and the dry weight of the crop plant was faster due to treatment of the seed with whey in comparison to the untreated control. Other parameters may also be incorporated such as increase in the number of cells and biochemical content of the cells, tissue and the whole plant accumulated or stored as a result of chain of synthetic process of which raw material are basically provided by the photosynthesis. Thus the photosynthesis is the key point to make available the raw material for the growth.

The study is based on data collected from 320 farmers (an 80 Mustard growers, 80 Wheat growers, 80 Pigeonpea and 80 Bajra growers) were selected through proportionate random sampling. To calculate the compound growth rates by exponential function was fitted to the indices of area, production and productivity.

In Indian agriculture, food grain crops cover the dominant part of cropped area (65 per cent). India is continuously facing pressure on the demand side due to limited land availability, steady population growth and several other production constraints, which appear as obstacles for supply of food grains. In the present study, growth in area, production and productivity of food grains were estimated using the linear trend and compound growth function.

The crop has a great potential in future due to respected increase in demand for forskolin widely used in glaucoma, cardiac problem and also used in treatment of certain type of cancer (Shah et al., 1980). Plant growth regulators are group of naturally occurring, organic substances which effect growth processes at minute concentration, synthesized at one plant part and are capable of translocation to site of its action and regulating one or more physiological activity like Photosynthesis rate, Stomatal conductance, Co2 utilization (ppm) and H2O utilization.

The study found that area under wheat, bajra, gram, redgram had declined and area under rice, Kharif jowar, Rabi jowar, greengram, blackgram, fruits and vegetables, soybean sugarcane and groundnut was increased. Similarly area under total cereal and pulse was also declined.

The major yield advantages are related to proper crop establishment, efficient utilization of the natural resources and better weeds suppression due to proper plant population and together with other agronomic cultural practices. But in Jharkhand situation, information on optimum seed rate of suitable hybrid rice for aerobic is very meager.

After nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, sulphur is the fourth nutrient, whose deficiency is widespread in India. Sulphur deficiency is observed primarily due to high crop yield and therefore higher rate of sulphur removal by crops, and lesser use of sulphur-containing fertilizers. Boron foliar sprays seemed to overcome the deleterious effects of drought by overcoming the drought-related molecular responses and consequently appeared to meliorate sunflower growth under insufficient water conditions.

Beneficial biofilms developed by nitrogen fixing bacteria and P - solubilising fungi in vitro conditions and also used as biofertilizers in non - leguminous crops and also observed that the bacteria colonized fungal mycelia to form biofilms. The biofilms showed high rates of biological nitrogen fixation and organic acid production which directly influences the synthesis of indole acetic acid like substances than microbes when used as monocultures. (Seneiviratne et al., 2003).

Predictive models for the rice crop (Oryza sativa L.) of Chhattisgarh plain and its constituent districts have been made. Models have been fitted for the area, productivity and production of the crop separately for above region. Based on these models prediction of area productivity and production of rice have been made year wise between 1998-99 to 2013-14.
