Human- animal relationships are subjected to two primary dimensions: those of affection and utility, which combine together to give a proper shape in animal welfare often expressed in commercial terms when farmers are involved in running a business on livestock. The present study was carried out in purposively selected commercial small holders‟ dairy farms in and around Guwahati under Kamrup (Metro) District of Assam. A total of 60 dairy farmers were selected based on apparently similar shed and animals following minimum scientific management.

Electrocardiographic technique was analysed in normal dairy cows in order to evaluate the electrical activity of heart and hence to detect abnormalities like cardiac arrhythmia and electrolyte disturbances which is very common in cattle. The base apex system seems to be the best and standard lead which gives clear electrocardiographic changes. The present study was conducted on normal dairy cows with no cardiac arrhythmias or abnormal heart sounds presented to the Large Animal Unit of TVCC, Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Veterinary Education and Research, Puducherry.

There has been only modest improvement in the productivity of indigenous cows, cross- breds or buffaloes over the last two decades in India (Table 1). The average daily milk production data at 6.52 kg for crossbreds, 2.10 kg for indigenous cattle and 4.44 kg for buffaloes (NSSO, 2007) suggests that the productivity of these animals is far below their genetic potential.
