A long fruit (lf) mutant was obtained from the cucumber inbred line ‘SN5’ by ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS)-mediated mutagenesis. We found that plant height and internode length of lf were significantly decreased, while leaf area was significantly increased in comparison to wild type (WT) plants. Higher carbohydrate level, together with lower chlorophyll content and photosynthetic parameters, was revealed in lf leaves than those of WT.

Parthenocarpy is an excellent agronomic trait that enables crops to set fruit in the absence of pollination and fertilization, and therefore to produce seedless fruit. Although parthenocarpy is widely recognized as a hormone-dependent process, hormone-insensitive parthenocarpy can also be observed in cucumber; however, its mechanism is poorly understood. To improve the global understanding of parthenocarpy and address the hormone-insensitive parthenocarpy shown in cucumber, we conducted a physiological and proteomic analysis of differently developed fruits.

Signal peptides are essential for plant growth and development. In plants, biological processes including cell-cell communication, cellular proliferation and differentiation, cellular determination of selfincompatibility, and defensive responses, all depend heavily on peptide-signaling networks such as CLE (CLAVATA3/ Embryo surrounding region-related).

Fruit skin color play important role in commercial value of cucumber, which is mainly determined by the content and composition of chlorophyll and anthocyanins. Therefore, understanding the related genes and metabolomics involved in composition of fruit skin color is essential for cucumber quality and commodity value.

Cucumber (Cucumis sativus) is a widely cultivated crop in the gourd family and plays an important role in our daily diet. However, the cucumber often suffers from disease during reproductive stage that affects the output and quality of cucumber. The commercial cultivars are highly susceptible to downy mildew disease which causes huge losses both in fruit quality and yield.

Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) fruit is cultivated for its nutritional and medicinal values. It is however, lost due to deterioration resulting from fungal pathogens. This research was undertaken to characterize the pathogens associated with fruit rot of cucumber collected from four retail outlets located in different parts of Maiduguri Metropolis. Assessment of the diseased cucumber fruits from the locations showed that Gamboru vegetable market was the most heavily infested location with all the fungal isolates.

An experiment was conducted to study the “Effect of growing media and fertigation schedules on growth and yield of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) under polyhouse condition” during kharif season of 2016 at Department of Horticulture, S.K.N. College of Agriculture, Jobner. The growing media: garden soil 18 kg/bag + vermicompost 2 kg/bag + cocopeat 2 cm layer at top shows the increase in all growth characters (chlorophyll and number of days taken to first flower appearance), yield attributes [number of fruits per vine, average fruit weight and fruit yield per 1000 m2 (11.

The present study was carried out during Late kharif, 2016 at College of Horticulture, Anantharajupeta. The experiment was conducted with an objective to identify divergent genotypes to be used as donor parents in crop improvement. Thirty-two genotypes along with two checks were evaluated in a randomized block design with three replications and the data on 25 yield and yield attributing traits were recorded. The analysis of variance revealed significant differences among all genotypes indicating the presence of sufficient amount of variability for the characters studied.

The present experiment was carried out to assess the degree of association of yield with its components, because yield is not an independent character and it is resultant of interaction of a number of component characters. Correlation provides information on the nature and extent of association between characters in a population. Most of the traits have shown significant correlation as revealed by the association study.

A field investigation was carried out with thirty genotypes of cucumber to evaluate the performance of the genotypes for growth and yield characters under hill zone of Karnataka. The genotype Sirsi Local-2 exhibited superiority for vine length, number of primary branches per plant, days to first harvest of the fruit, per cent marketable fruits per vine and chlorophyll content. Minimum number of node to appear first female flower, highest number of fruits per vine (13.90) and maximum yield per vine were found in the cultivar Poinsette.

With the objective to find the association of different seed characters with fruit yield in cucumber, an experiment was conducted with 30 indigenous genotypes, collected from five different states, at the Experimental Farm of the Department of Vegetable Science, Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan during Kharif, 2015. Results revealed that yield per plant had positive and significant association with all the seed characters under study viz., seed length, seed breadth, hundred seed weight, germination percentage, seed vigour index-I and seed vigour index-II.

Research results indicated significant variation in all the vegetative growth attributes and yield parameters in different drip irrigation and mulches. The maximum number of branches per vine, length of vine, number of leaves per vine and leaf area were recorded with 1.0 ETc as compared to other drip irrigation treatments at 60, 90 DAT and harvest. However, in respect to earliness i.e. days to first flowering, fruiting and harvesting were also observed with the treatment 1.0 ETc.

Fourteen cucumber accessions collected from different Northeast states of India were analysed for variations by means of agro-morphological traits and palynological characteristics. Phenotypic variations in fruit length (19.20 cm – 28.33 cm, fruit width 5.0 cm – 7.3 cm), number of locules (3 – 4/fruit), seed length (0.8 cm – 1.2 cm), seed width (0.3 cm – 0.43 cm) and weight of 100 seeds (1.0 gm – 3.4 gm/ accessions) were observed. Variations were also observed in pollen characteristics among the accessions.

The experiment was conducted at College of Horticulture and Forestry, Central Agricultural University, Pasighat, Arunachal Pradesh to study the effect of integrated nutrient management on growth and yield of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) grown under protected condition. It was laid out in Randomized Block Design comprising of thirteen treatments replicated thrice. The experiment was conducted during the off season with gynoecious hybrid variety KSP-1301. Integration of inorganic fertilizers, organic manures and biofertilizers has increased the efficacy of the nutrients in the soil.

Fifteen gynoecious parthenocarpic hybrids hybrids/lines of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) were evaluated under polyhouse (fifty percent shade/naturally ventilated) conditions for yield and quality. The genotypic and phenotypic coefficient of variations were highest for nodal position of first female flower, number fruits, fruit weight and fruit yield per plant which indicates maximum variability is existing in the genotypes. High genetic advance as per cent mean was observed for most of the characters, indicating that these characters are controlled by additive gene action.
