Cultivars used as parents

Pears (Pyrus spp.) are one of the most important fruit crops in temperate regions. Japanese pear breeding has been carried out for over 100 years, working to release new cultivars that have good fruit quality and other desirable traits. Local cultivar ‘Nijisseiki’ and its relatives, which have excellent fruit texture, have been repeatedly used as parents in the breeding program. This strategy has led to inbreeding within recent cultivars and selections.

Genetic effects and genotype × environment interactions govern seed oil content in Brassica napus L.
As seed oil content (OC) is a key measure of rapeseed quality, better understanding the genetic basis of OC would greatly facilitate the breeding of high-oil cultivars. Here, we investigated the components of genetic effects and genotype × environment interactions (GE) that govern OC using a full diallel set of nine parents, which represented a wide range of the Chinese rapeseed cultivars and pure lines with various OCs.

Apple (Malus x domestica Borkh.) is one of the most important fruit tree crops of temperate areas, with great economic and cultural value. Apple cultivars can be maintained for centuries in plant collections through grafting, and some are thought to date as far back as Roman times.

The improvement of yam (Dioscorea spp) nutritional quality is now an important challenge for yam breeders and producers. In order to identify yam parents with high technological potential for their use in varietal improvement schemes, two most dominant cooking forms (boiled and pounded) were considered. A total of 48 yam (Dioscorea rotundata Poir.) cultivars used as parents in Benin yam breeding program were evaluated. Trained and untrained panelists were invited to taste coded and randomized samples of boiled and pounded yam for the various tests using appropriate methods.

Sphorophytic pollen-stigma incompatibility is a characteristic of the genus Corylus. Incompatibility alleles expressed in the pollen of Turkish hazelnut cultivars were identified. Cultivars were selected from the field collection at Giresun, and were used as the pollen parents.

Developing successful strategies to ensure future increase in yield of soybean and peanut crops hinges in part, on improving the genetic basis of the cultivars. Knowledge of genetic relationships in crop breeding programs provides valuable information that can be used by plant breeders as a parental line selection tool.
