  • Orobanche cumana is a parasitic plant that can lead to advanced losses in yield of agricultural lands cultivating sunflower, depending on the sunflower varieties and the level of contamination. In our study, genetic diversity of six O. cumana populations from the Thrace region of Turkey was determined with the help of eight SSR (microsatellite) loci. All SSR loci were polymorphic. A total of 23 alleles were determined for the analyzed 120 samples. Allele number of each SSR locus ranged from two to six. Mean number of alleles (Na = 2.271), effective allele number (Ne = 1.

  • Sclerotinia sclerotiorum is a necrotrophic fungus that causes Sclerotinia head rot (SHR) in sunflower, with epidemics leading to severe yield losses. In this work, we present an association mapping (AM) approach to investigate the genetic basis of natural resistance to SHR in cultivated sunflower, the fourth most widely grown oilseed crop in the world.

  • Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) is one of the important oilseed crop, with comparatively narrow genetic base. To broaden the genetic base wild species have been used through wide hybridization. Generally wide hybridization comes with linkage drags which contribute several undesirable traits to cultivated species. In the present study, comparative analysis of backcross (BC2F3) and selfed (BC1F4) progenies was carried out to know the extent of variability in desirable direction created in both the generation derived from wide hybridization.

  • Sunflower is one of the four most important oilseed crops grown worldwide and the nutritional quality of its edible oil ranks among the best vegetable oils in cultivation. Sunflower oil has been traditionally appreciated in the world oil market. However, new emerging markets are demanding changes in oil quality for both food and non-food applications. Nutritional and functional properties determining oil quality are primarily determined by the fatty acid composition of oil. Seed oil content and composition are determined by genotypic factors and environmental conditions.

  • Powdery mildew caused by Golovinomyces cichoracearum (DC.) V.P. Heluta (formerly Erysiphe cichoracearum) is a common foliar disease on senescing leaves of cultivated sunflower in warmer regions of the world. In India, the powdery mildew disease is becoming major constraint in cultivation of sunflower crop especially during post rainy season. Screening of the sunflower germplasm lines against the disease would be of a great help to identify the resistance source.

  • Burning of crop residues generates large amount of pollutants leads to the cardiorespiratory diseases. Also, it has negative impact on organic matter, nitrogen and other micro and macro soil nutrients. Soil incorporation of crop residues is one of the best alternatives to the crop residue burning. Sunflower, having most of the cultivable area in Karnataka and Maharashtra has proved to be very beneficial for the improvement of soil productivity.

  • The district Kapurthala is a fully diversified in cultivation of crops as the major cropping sequence followed is paddy-wheat, paddy-potato-muskmelon/watermelon/spring maize/ vegetables. The area under two crops namely sunflower and summer moong is uncertain and depends on the selling rate prevalent in the market at the time of harvesting and ease of marketing. This study was based on a survey conducted on 100 farmers in the district.

  • Argentina has a long tradition of sunflower breeding, and its germplasm is a valuable genetic resource worldwide. However, knowledge of the genetic constitution and variability levels of the Argentinean germplasm is still scarce, rendering the global map of cultivated sunflower diversity incomplete

  • Globally, Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) is one of the most important cultivated oilseed crops. High oleic sunflower oil maintains oil stability also offers a trans-free oil solution for customers. They help in diminishing the cholesterol leading to a reduction in heart diseases. High oleic acid content genotypes have been developed whose oil has higher oxidative stability and better dietary properties than standard genotypes.

  • Improvement in sunflower emphasizes the urgency of generating heterotic hybrids that is achieved by tapping the excellent combining ability and heterotic vigour available in the genetically divergent material. Concomitant with major diseases prevailing largely and most of the sunflower experimental hybrids and cultivars being based on single cytoplasm, large scale cultivation of the crop finds itself in greater threat as evident by susceptibility tonew emerging diseases and declining yield levels over the decades.

  • Sunflower is the fourth most important oilseed crop in the world after soybean, Rapeseedmustard and groundnut. It had 20 genera and 400 subspecies. Commercial cultivation of sunflower was started in India during 1972. In India, first ever sunflower hybrid developed by Seetharam (1980), the sunflower hybrids development is based on new sources of cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS). So far single source of cytoplasm PET-1 has been exploited extensively for hybrid (F1) production in sunflower.

The spawning was done by sterilization of all the seven substrates. The bags were kept in spawn running room with the maintenance of temperature (30°C–35° C) and relative humidity (70–80 %) respectively.
