Orobanche cumana is a parasitic plant that can lead to advanced losses in yield of agricultural lands cultivating sunflower, depending on the sunflower varieties and the level of contamination. In our study, genetic diversity of six O. cumana populations from the Thrace region of Turkey was determined with the help of eight SSR (microsatellite) loci. All SSR loci were polymorphic. Sclerotinia sclerotiorum is a necrotrophic fungus that causes Sclerotinia head rot (SHR) in sunflower, with epidemics leading to severe yield losses. In this work, we present an association mapping (AM) approach to investigate the genetic basis of natural resistance to SHR in cultivated sunflower, the fourth most widely grown oilseed crop in the world.

Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) is one of the important oilseed crop, with comparatively narrow genetic base. To broaden the genetic base wild species have been used through wide hybridization. Generally wide hybridization comes with linkage drags which contribute several undesirable traits to cultivated species. In the present study, comparative analysis of backcross (BC2F3) and selfed (BC1F4) progenies was carried out to know the extent of variability in desirable direction created in both the generation derived from wide hybridization.

Powdery mildew caused by Golovinomyces cichoracearum (DC.) V.P. Heluta (formerly Erysiphe cichoracearum) is a common foliar disease on senescing leaves of cultivated sunflower in warmer regions of the world. In India, the powdery mildew disease is becoming major constraint in cultivation of sunflower crop especially during post rainy season. Screening of the sunflower germplasm lines against the disease would be of a great help to identify the resistance source.

Sunflower is the fourth most important oilseed crop in the world after soybean, Rapeseedmustard and groundnut. It had 20 genera and 400 subspecies. Commercial cultivation of sunflower was started in India during 1972. In India, first ever sunflower hybrid developed by Seetharam (1980), the sunflower hybrids development is based on new sources of cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS). Performance of milky mushroom (Calocybe indica) on different agricultural wastes like paddy straw, castor stalks, sunflower stalks, coconut coir pith, oil palm waste and groundnut shells was evaluated during the summer season. The spawning was done by sterilization of all the seven substrates.
