Cultivation of tomato crop

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is known as the most important vegetable crop that is widely cultivated throughout the world. Improvements of the growth, development, and productivity have become core strategies for the sustainable development of tomato in many countries. Here, we performed an intensive summary of recent applications of genome editing in customizing the growth habits and fruit quality in tomato plants.

Colletotrichum species cause anthracnose in various tropical crops in both cultivation and postharvest periods. The current synthetic fungicides to treat anthracnose sometime show toxic effects for farmers, residues on foods, and environmental impacts. In this work, turmeric extract containing curcuminoids was used as an active ingredient and formulated into a nanoemulsion to control anthracnose in red pepper and tomato fruits.

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) regarded as poor man’s apple is one of the most remunerable and amply cultivated vegetable crop belonging to family Solanaceae. Among several diseases affecting tomato, Septoria leaf spot has procured the status of a major disease and was prevalent in all the three districts of the valley surveyed during kharif, 2018 with overall disease incidence and intensity of 61.86 per cent and intensity 33.39 per cent.

The major tomato producing districts are Raipur, Durg, Bastar, Jashpur and Bilaspur. Fourty farmers were selected purposively from four villages i.e. Banbarad, Aheri and Baghdumar. Five wholesalers and seven retailers were also selected for the fulfilment of the objectives. The primary data were collected for year 2018-19.

The performance of green shade net on yield and quality of tomato was evaluated at farmers field in Shahdol district. Under shade net house condition green colour shade net having 50% shade factor was used in the study. Similar crop along with similar cultural practices in the open field and shade net cultivation was selected for performance evaluation. The study revealed that under shade net condition performance of tomato the crop yield, number of fruit per plant, fruit weight, plant height, harvest duration and number of harvest increased by 75.32 per cent, 61 per cent, 76.

The present study entitled “Studies on yield and economics of winter vegetables in North East Ghat Zone of Odisha” was designed to assess the comparative profitability of selected winter vegetables: namely tomato, cabbage, cauliflower, carrot and beet. The experiment was carried out on instructional farm of College of Agriculture, GIBS, Gunupur, Odisha during pre-rabi season 2017-18 with six treatments and ten replications treated in Randomized Block Design. The results of the study were statistically analysed and it showed significant differences between the treatments.

The present studies were carried out under protected cultivation at CSK Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya, Palampur. Single spray of three insecticides viz., imidacloprid (0.018%), indoxacarb (0.015%) and lambda-cyhalothrin (0.004%) was given on tomato crop. The residues of imidacloprid and indoxacarb were worked out on tomato fruits during winter season 2015 whereas lambda-cyhalothrin residues were worked out during summer season 2016. Tomato fruit samples were collected at 0, 1, 3, 5, 7 and 10 days after application of insecticides.

Powdery mildew caused by Oidium neolycopersici L. Kiss is one of the most important diseases of tomato under polyhouse conditions. During 2014-15, polyhouses of Kangra district (H.P., India) were surveyed and the disease severity was observed between 5.0 to 89.5 per cent affecting both quality and quantity of the harvest. Fourteen hybrids/cultivars of tomato were screened under p house conditions during 2014-15 cropping season, but all were found either susceptible or weakly resistant against powdery mildew.

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L) is one of the major vegetable crops cultivated in India, which plays a major role in supplementing the income of small and marginal farmers of Seoni district of Madhya Pradesh. The front line demonstrations (FLDs) were conducted on farmer’s field in Seoni district of Madhya Pradesh for three consecutive years (2014-15 to 2016-17) at two adopted villages. Prevailing farmer's practices were treated as control for comparison with demonstrated technology.

Epidemics of Tomato leaf curl virus associated with upsurge of whiteflies (Bemasia tabacci) on tomato crop has been frequently reported which up to 100% yield losses (Shelat, et.al, 2014). Tomato is one of the most important vegetable crops cultivated for its fleshy fruits. Rhizoctonia solani is the most important soilborne pathogen of tomato crop and in recent past it is known to cause blight symptoms on stems of tomato plants which has become a serious threat to tomato cultivation in Ranga Reddy district of Andhra Pradesh. The pathogen was isolated on PDA from blight affected tomato plants collected from farmers’ fields and was identified as Rhizoctonia solani based on its cultural and morphological characteristics.

Of all the abiotic stresses limiting crop productivity, drought is considered as the most important. Despite various research initiatives, drought continues to be a major challenge. To overcome this limitation and to improve crop productivity, it is important to improve the drought tolerance associated traits in cultivated plants. The use of industrial waste water for irrigation through drip system has emerged a very important way to utilize its nutrients and removal of its pollutants load by cultivating various crops (tomato, brinjal). An experiment was conducted to evaluate the impact of textile factory effluents (0, 10, 35, 75 and 100% concentration) on germination and some physiological parameters like biomass production, root development in vegetable crop. Plants were raised in small pots in triplicate and irrigated with various concentrations (0, 10, 35, 75 and 100%) of effluent.

Weed is a plant growing where it is not desired so weeds are ubiquitous. The vegetable fields are usually infested by a wide spectrum of broad and grassy weeds. Weeds compete with the crops for water, soil, nutrients, light, space and crop yields are significantly reduced as reported by several studies. The vegetable as well as agricultural crops are infested with a variety of weeds. Out of over 800 weeds documented in India, 80 are considered as serious and nearly 200 as major weeds. They also harbour many insect-pests and microorganisms.

The non-availability of a standardized scale to measure the farmers‟ knowledge level influenced the researchers to construct a test for measuring the knowledge on recommended tomato production package of practices. Pertinent items were collected covering all aspects from the crop production guide developed by the Department of Horticulture, Govt. of Andhra Pradesh. After getting jury opinion on the items, test index of item difficulty, index of item discrimination and point biserial correlation for the items were worked out. All these were taken in to account to arrive at the final scale.
