Bồng Nga truật, or Fingerroot, (Boesenbergia rotunda (L.) Mansf syn. Boesenbergia pandurata (Roxb.) Schltr.), also known as Ngải bún, is a common ginger species in Mekong Delta. Its tuber roots and rhizomes are often used to cook rice noodles as an alternative to Tumeric (Curcuma longa L.). This study was to primarily describe morphological and microanatomical figures of Bồng Nga truật, together with characteristic figures in rhizome and tuber root powder.

A phytochemical investigation on the ethanolic (EtOH) extract of the Vietnamese Curcuma longa (C. longa) rhizomes has led to the isolation of four curcuminoids including curcumin (1), demethoxycurcumin (2), bisdemethoxycurcumin (3), and cyclocurcumin (4). The chemical structure of compounds 1-4 was elucidated by Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Mass spectrometry (MS) spectral data.

This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of different fertilizers doses with organic manures on micronutrients availability in turmeric (Curcuma longa L.). A field experiment in completely randomized block design was conducted with eight treatments which were replicated thrice. The eight treatments were comprised of four soil test crop response based treatments along with farmer’s practice, general fertilizer dose, soil test based and absolute control.

Turmeric (Curcuma longa L) rhizome rot caused by Pythium aphanidermatum was one of the divesting disease and causes accountable losses. All fungicides, bioagents, botanicals and soil amendments (alone and in combination) tested in vitro for management of turmeric rhizome rot was found effective against P. aphanidermatum.

The disease has been reported to causes more than 60 per cent mortality of seedlings both in nursery and field condition and about 50-80 per cent losses during storage (Nirmal, 1992); rhizome rot resulted in yield loss of 50% (Rajalakshmi et al., 2016).

Thirty varieties of turmeric Curcuma longa L. were screened in the field against Pythium aphanidermatum for one year during 2016-2017 at College of Horticulture, Anantharajupeta, Y.S.R. Kadapa, Andhra Pradesh. These varieties were also screened in lab and net house (pot) condition. Out of 30 varieties two varieties (Salem and Prathibha) showed resistance to rhizome rot and five (TCP-129, VK-9, IC-330113, IC-033007 and IC-212606) were moderately resistant, providing good material for developing rhizome rot resistant turmeric varieties.

In post-harvest operation of spices, grinding is important step. Turmeric rhizomes are generally long size and very hard to grind. In a small grinder, it is not possible to ground whole turmeric rhizome into powder. Cutting of turmeric then generally done manually. In some of the large grinder, the whole turmeric rhizomes fed into the grinder causes heat generation during grinding.

In this study, commercially available broiler chickens of Vencobb strain were reared from day one to forty two days in the deep litter system of management and the birds were divided into three groups. Normal feed tested free of aflatoxin (AF), was given to the control (Group1). Aflatoxin (1 ppm) was supplemented with the feed to Group 2 and Curcuma longa (1%) + AF was supplemented with the feed to Group 3.

Mucormycosis is an uncommon but life-threatening invasive fungal infection, mostly occurs in immunocompromised patients. Lacking the appropriate antifungal drugs is one of the reasons that lead to difficulties in the management of mucormycosis. Curcuma longa has been used traditionally and widely to treat various diseases, including fungal infections.
