Cytokinins (CKs) are considered one of the critical phytohormones with an important role in plant response to abiotic stresses. One of the key enzymes in regulating CK levels is CK oxidase/dehydrogenase (CKX), which catalyzes the irreversible CK degradation.

Legumes can establish on nitrogen-deprived soils a symbiotic interaction with Rhizobia bacteria, leading to the formation of nitrogen-fixing root nodules. Cytokinin phytohormones are critical for triggering root cortical cell divisions at the onset of nodule initiation.

TaCKX wheat gene family members (GFMs) encode the enzyme cytokinin oxidase/dehydrogenase (CKX), which irreversibly degrades cytokinins. The genes are important regulators of cytokinin content and take part in growth and development, with a major impact on yield-related traits.

The present investigation was carried out to study the influence of antioxidants on in vitro culture of Gliricidia sepium. Soft nodal stem segments were inoculated on MS medium supplemented with desired concentrations plant growth regulator such as cytokinins (BAP/Kinetin) and different antioxidants. Antioxidants viz., activated charcoal, ascorbic acid, citric acid and polyvinylpyrollidone were used to control the accumulation of phenolic compounds in the culture medium and enhance the rate of micropropagation.

The cytokinin production and transport from root to leaves is hindered under water stress causing leaf senescence due to the synthesis of hydrolytic enzymes. A part of stress effect may be linked to the regulation of osmotic solutes and maintenance of turgidity for stomatal conductance, photosynthesis and protein synthesis accompanied with reduced peroxidation of chloroplast and mitochondrial membranes in pearl millet under kinetin and cycocel treatments.

Cytokinin activates transcriptional cascades important for development and the responses to biotic and abiotic stresses. Most of what is known regarding cytokinin-regulated gene expression comes from studies of the dicotyledonous plant Arabidopsis thaliana.

In many species floral senescence is coordinated by ethylene. Endogenous levels rise, and exogenous application accelerates senescence. Furthermore, floral senescence is often associated with increased reactive oxygen species, and is delayed by exogenously applied cytokinin.

Lycopene is an important carotenoid pigment in red fruits and vegetables, especially in tomato. Although lycopene biosynthesis and catabolism have been found to be regulated by multiple factors including phytohormones, little is known about their regulatory mechanism. Cytokinins are crucial to various aspects of plant growth.

Plant growth regulator or phytohormone may be defined as an organic substance produced naturally in plants controlling growth and other functions at a site remote from its place of production in minute quantities. Plant growth regulators include auxins, gibberellins, cytokinins, ethylene, growth retardants and growth inhibitors. The production of poor quality fruits is a matter of common experience. It would be therefore worthwhile to improve the yield and quality of fruit crops by foliar application of plant growth regulators.

Two types of glandular trichomes i.e. Capitate triangular glandular and Capitate globular glandular were recorded in sunflower. Nitrogen availability regulates globular glandular trichomes development from epidermal cells by cell division via cross talk of cytokinin in roots to plant metabolic pathways in leaves. The size of trichomes on sunflower leaves may be altered with the amino acid composition and levels mobilized from older leaves under nitrogen deficiency.

Present investigation was carried out to determine the optimum level of different plant growth regulators for rapid shoot multiplication, rooting and hardening of micropropagated plantlets of Aloe vera. The experiment was laid out using completely randomized design (CRD) with ten replications during 2018-19. Auxiliary shoot explants were inoculated on MS medium supplemented with various concentrations of cytokinin (BAP 0.5 – 6.0 mg/l) alone and BAP (0.5-6.0 mg/l) with auxin (NAA 0.1 – 0.6) in combination for direct shoot bud proliferation.

Plant hormones are signal molecules produced within the plant, and occur in extremely low concentrations. Phytohormones determine the formation of flowers, stems, leaves, shedding of leaves, and development and ripening of fruits. They shape the plant, affecting seed growth, time of flowering, sex of flowers, senescence of leaves and fruits. Hormones are vital for plant growth and lacking them, plants would be mostly a mass of undifferentiated cells. Plant growth regulators include auxins, gibberellins, cytokinins, ethylene, growth retardants and growth inhibitors.

THE CYTOKININS WERE DISCOVERED in the search for factors that stimulate plant cells to divide (i.e., undergo cytokinesis). Since their discovery, cytokinins have been shown to have effects on many other physiological and developmental processes, including leaf senescence, nutrient mobilization, apical dominance, the formation and activity of shoot apical meristems, floral development, the breaking of bud dormancy, and seed germination.

The signal of the plant hormone cytokinin is perceived by membrane-located sensor histidine kinases and transduced by other members of the plant two-component system. InArabidopsis thaliana, 28 two-component system proteins (phosphotransmitters and response regulators) act down-stream of three receptors, transmitting the signal from the membrane to the nucleus and modulating the cellular response.

b-Glucosidases such as Zm-p60.1 (Zea mays) and Bgl4:1 (Brassica napus) have implicated roles in regulating plant development by releasing biologi-cally active cytokinins from O-glucosides. A key determinant of substrate specificity in Zm-p60.1 is the F193–F200–W373–F461 cluster. However, despite sharing the same substrates, amino acids in the active sites of Zm-p60.1 and Bgl4:1 differ dramatically.
