We have shown that chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is associated with increased production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and the cytotoxic mediator, granzyme B by peripheral blood steroid resistant CD28nullCD137 + CD8+ T cells and granzyme B by NKT-like and NK cells.

Recently, we collected fruit bodies of Ganoderma neo-japonicum in Lamdong Province and found that the EtOAc crude extract obtained, having an IC50 value of 19.14 µg/mL, shows strong cytotoxicity against the KB cell line. This paper describes the isolation and cytotoxicity of four compounds from this mushroom.

Polyhydroxylsteroids or oxysterols are oxygenated derivatives of steroids and constitute a family of compounds with various biological activities. Especially, oxysterols have been shown to exhibit cytotoxicity in a number of cell lines, including smooth muscle cells, fibroblasts and vascular endothelial cells.

Their structures were characterized by the combination of HR-MS, one and two dimensional NMR spectroscopic analyses. In addition, ergosterol peroxide and kansenone showed good cytotoxicity against four cancer cell lines, KB (human epidermal carcinoma), MCF7 (human breast carcinoma), SK-LU-1 (human lung carcinoma) and Hep-G2 (hepatocellular carcinoma). This is the first report on the chemical constituents and cytotoxic steroids from Ganoderma sp. in Laos.

During the last decades, dozens of compounds have been isolated from Mallotus apelta. These compounds which are classified under the categories viz. terpenoids, steroids, flavonoids, cumarino-lignoids, cembrane diterpenoids, and benzopyranoids. They were known to exhibit interesting biological activities. The phytochemical investigations revealed that malloapelta B which was the major component of M. apelta, showed strong NF-B and NFAT transcription factor inhibitory and cytotoxic activities. Numerous studies on the synthesis of some derivatives of malloapelta B were carried out.
