The observations were recorded on five randomly selected plants and the mean values were subjected to Observations were recorded on 24 quantitative characters and data was subjected to statistical analysis using Mahalanobis D2 (1936) statistic to assess the genetic divergence. The genotypes were grouped on the basis of minimum generalized distance using the Tocher’s method (Rao, 1952).

In the present study, an attempt was made to assess the genetic divergence among the 103 kodo millet germplasm accessions using Mahalanobis D² statistic collected from Millet Breeding Station, Coimbatore. The observations were recorded on yield components and nutritional quality traits. The 103 germplasm lines were grouped into 11 different clusters based on D² analysis. Cluster I had a maximum of 63 genotypes, followed by clusters II and III with 14 each, cluster X with four genotypes and cluster VIII with two genotypes.

In this experiment 55 linseed genotypes were evaluated to determine genetic diversity by Mahalanobis D2 statistics during rabi 2018-19 at the Department of Plant breeding and Genetics, Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology, Odisha India. It revealed that 55 genotypes were grouped into eleven clusters. Result envisaged that genotypes grouped within a particular cluster are more or less genetically similar.

Genetic diversity study involving twenty one thermo tolerant tomato genotypes was carried out for twelve physiological and biochemical characters at Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi during summer season of the year 2014. All the genotypes were grouped into 4 distinct clusters using D2 statistics. Cluster I and cluster II comprised of 10 genotypes represented by heat tolerant genotypes while cluster III showed 4 heat sensitive genotypes. The clustering analysis of all genotypes showed that heat sensitive and heat tolerant genotypes were represented by distinct clusters.

Fourty genotypes of fenugreek were grown at College Farm, N. M. College of Agriculture, Navsari Agricultural University, Navsari during Rabi 2015-16. Grouping of the genotypes was carried-out by following Tocher's method (Rao, 1952). The D2 analysis indicated presence of ample genetic diversity among the genotypes studied, which were grouped into 6 clusters. The maximum inter-cluster distance was observed between cluster-VI and V followed by cluster-VI and V. The minimum inter-cluster distance was depicted between cluster-V and IV.

Sixty-one sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) multihead inbred lines including one check were evaluated to study the morphological variations for twelve characters by using Mahalanobis D2 statistics. These genotypes were grouped into 7 clusters, among which the cluster I with 52 genotypes was the largest followed by cluster II with 4 genotypes. Maximum inter cluster distance was recorded between cluster II and VII (740.36) followed by clusters I and VII (426.99).

Study of genetic diversity among elite genotypes of rice (Oryza sativa L.) for direct seeding traits
An experiment was carried out with 48 elite rice genotypes to study genetic diversity for direct seeding traits. They were evaluated for 19 characters consisting of 13 agronomical and six physiological using Mahalanobis D2 statistics. On the basis of D2 values the genotypes were grouped into eight clusters. Cluster I and VI were the largest containing 15 and 12 genotypes respectively followed by cluster III with 6 and cluster V with 4 genotypes.

Eleven genotypes of chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) were investigated to understand the extent of genetic diversity through 16 growth and yield attributing characters. Genetic diversity in chilli genotypes based on sixteen characters was estimated using Mahalanobis’s D2 statistics. The genotypes were grouped into four different clusters by non-hierarchical clustering. The cluster I had the maximum number (7) of genotypes while cluster III and IV each contained only one genotype. Cluster II and III had highest inter cluster distance (249.759) followed by cluster III and IV (239.433).
