Dairy farmers of Gujarat

The present study was conducted to know the knowledge of dairy animal owners in animal breeding practices a field survey in Surat district (Mahuva, Mandvi, Umarpada and Mangrol talukas. From each talukas three villages (60 cattle owners) were selected to take the observation related to the study. The present study revealed that majority of dairy farmers were belonged to middle to old age group, educate up to primary and secondary level, marginal to small land holdings, rearing animals up to 10.

The study was conducted in Kheda and Panchmahal districts of middle Gujarat during 2015-16 to assess the comparative adoption level of improved animal husbandry practices by dairy farmers of Kheda and Panchmahal districts of Gujarat. Four talukas from each district, five villages from each taluka and five respondents/dairy farmers from each village were randomly selected, thus covering 40 villages and a total of 200 respondents.

A bench mark survey was undertaken to find out the dairy animal management practices followed by the member farmers of dairy co-operative society in randomly selected three talukas of Rajkot district in Saurashtra region of Gujarat state. In each taluka five villages and in each village ten respondents were selected. It was observed that all the respondents milked their animals twice in a day by using wet knuckling method (98%) of milking – Majority of the milked produced generally goes to dairy co - operative society except the amount, which routinely used for family need.

A field survey was conducted in Aravalli district to determine the healthcare management practices followed by dairy farmers. Data were collected from randomly selected 150 dairy farmers through personal interview with the help of pretested structured schedule. It was revealed that majority of the respondents (86.66%) observed off feed as main symptom of illness followed by decrease in milk production (39.33%), uneasiness (24.00%) and dry muzzle (21.33%).

The present study was conducted by keeping a concept in mind that dairy development is not feasible unless dairy farm women are trained in scientific dairy farming. The present study was conducted in KVK operational area of Rajkot district with 80 dairying farm women purposively selected who were intensively carried out agriculture and dairying activities. The study inferred that overall distribution of dairy farmwomen according to training need, 56.25 per cent had medium training need followed by high training need.
