Darjeeling hills

The experiment was carried out in two consecutive years 2009 and 2010 at Regional Research Station (Hill zone) of Uttar Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Kalimpong, Darjeeling, West Bengal to study the effect of organic resources of nutrients for corms and cormlet production of three cultivars of gladiolus (Gladiolus sp.) namely Candyman, American Beauty and Jester.

Northeastern Himalayan hill region of India is known to produce quality mandarin (C. reticulata) commercially. Citrus tristeza virus (CTV), an aphid (Toxoptera citricidus) transmitted closterovirus, is a major problem to cause decline of mandarin in this region. The different orchards of Mirik in the Darjeeling and Rumtek of East Sikkim were surveyed. CTV incidence of 48-53.3% in Mirik and 40-60% in Rumtek were estimated using direct antigen coated-ELISA and polymerase chain reaction.

The study was undertaken with the objectives to assess reasons for mandarin decline and perceived constraints of the mandarin orange growers. The study was purposively conducted in the hill region of Darjeeling district in West Bengal where Darjeeling mandarin orange is the pride fruit of the region. In all, 150 respondents were considered for the study further 30 key respondents were also included in the study to understand evidently the reasons for decline in mandarin orange production.

Groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) is an important edible leguminous oilseed crop. Diseases of groundnut act as the limiting factor to its economic production. Recently, the stem rot caused by Sclerotium rolfsii is becoming severe disease of groundnut in India. Crop Losses up to 59 per cent due to stem rot disease have been reported by many researchers.
