  • The Baikal seal is the only endemic mammal of Lake Baikal. In late October 2017, 132 dead Baikal seals were found on the shore of the lake. To identify causes of death, postmortem necropsy, virological, chemical toxicological, microbiological, and parasitological studies were carried out. Several hypotheses for explaining the causes of the deaths were put forward. The most probable causes are heart failure and asphyxia due to echo sounders (sonar).

  • The relative resistance or susceptibility of nearly 215 rice genotypes supplied by Indian Institute of Rice Research, Hyderabad was screened to identify the resistant genotype against rice yellow stem borer. The trial was conducted following augmented block design with two checks i.e., local check (BPT 5204) and susceptible check (TN1) for a period of two successive kharif seasons (2016 & 2017). The per cent incidence of stem borer was recorded at their peak infestation of dead hearts at tillering stage and white ears at reproductive stage.

The total mortality over a period of 10 weeks was 2.1 per cent. The birds appeared dull and depressed. At necropsy, ovary, pancreas revealed swollen and greyish nodular growth, firm in consistency and smooth when cut. Histopathology of ovary, liver, heart and brain corroborated with the gross lesions. Reticuloendotheliosis virus (REV) was confirmed by conducting polymerase chain reaction (PCR) (Mitra et al., 2013).

  • Sorghum shoot fly [Atherigona soccata (Rondani)] is one of the most important pests of grain sorghum. It is important to understand the nature of gene action to breed for resistance to the target insect pest. In the present study, a population of 259 sorghum recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from cross 296B (shoot fly susceptible) x IS 18551 (shoot fly resistant) were evaluated in shoot fly screening nursery to study the inheritance of shoot fly resistance. Variances due to RIL genotypes (G), screening environment (E) and G x E interactions were significant for the traits studied.

  • Murder was like magic, he thought. The quickness of his hand always deceived the eye, and that was how it was going to stay. He was like the postman delivering to a house where afterwards they would swear there had been no callers. This was the knowledge that was lodged in his being like a pacemaker in a heart patient. Without the power of his magic he'd be dead. Or as good as. He knew just from looking at her that she would be the next. Even before the eye contact, he knew. There had always been a very particular...

  • A little boy watched his father work and learned the lesson that man lives best by the sweat of his own brow, not by the sweat of other men's brows. While they toiled, through the shadows of the surrounding forest a savage stole secretly toward them on his soft moccasins. He paused, aimed his gun and fired. The man fell over dead; then the Indian came rapidly, caught up the boy and ran off toward the woods with him. But his older brother, Mordecai, ran to the log hut and catching up the ever ready gun shot the Indian through the heart and sent him...

  • Whatever value this publication may have, lies in the fact that it offers a typical case--a small cross section of the army that freed the slave and saved the Union. The Editor of the Commission's publications has asked me to state briefly something about myself. I am one of the multitude of "hyphenated" Americans, born across the water but reared under the flag. I am a Cambro-American, proud of both designations, and with abundant heart, loyalty, and perhaps too much head pride in both.
