Dead heart

The Baikal seal is the only endemic mammal of Lake Baikal. In late October 2017, 132 dead Baikal seals were found on the shore of the lake. To identify causes of death, postmortem necropsy, virological, chemical toxicological, microbiological, and parasitological studies were carried out. Several hypotheses for explaining the causes of the deaths were put forward. The most probable causes are heart failure and asphyxia due to echo sounders (sonar).

The relative resistance or susceptibility of nearly 215 rice genotypes supplied by Indian Institute of Rice Research, Hyderabad was screened to identify the resistant genotype against rice yellow stem borer. The trial was conducted following augmented block design with two checks i.e., local check (BPT 5204) and susceptible check (TN1) for a period of two successive kharif seasons (2016 & 2017). The per cent incidence of stem borer was recorded at their peak infestation of dead hearts at tillering stage and white ears at reproductive stage.

A trial was carried out to evaluate the grain sorghum varieties for their reaction to major pests in advanced varietal experiment during kharif 2015 at All India Coordinated Sorghum Improvement Project, Sorghum Research Unit, Dr. PDKV, Akola. Field studies on the effect of organic and inorganic sources of silicon against yellow stem borer in rice revealed the superiority of calcium silicate at 2t/ha and diatomaceous earth at 0.45t/ha in arresting stem borer damage with a record of average 5.84 – 11.97 % dead heart (DH) and 2.56 – 8.84% white ear head (WEH) as against 14.75 – 21.34 % DH and 8.35-14.93% WEH in control. An field experiment was conducted in two consecutive year (Spring 2015 and 2016) at NawabGanj Farm of C. S. Azad University of Agriculture and Technology, Kanpur 208002 (U.P.). The Shoot fly (egg/plants) on maize appeared in both year (Spring 2015 and 2016) from 7th to 13th standard week and the highest egg laying was found in 11th S.W. (2.83egg/plant) in above years. Stem borer, Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) dead heart was observed from 8th to 16th standard week after this period there was no newly dead heart was found till the crop harvested.

Seven dead commercial layer birds of 84 weeks age were examined to know the cause of death. The total flock size was 50,000 and birds were raised in cages from day one of age. The total mortality over a period of 10 weeks was 2.1 per cent. The birds appeared dull and depressed. At necropsy, ovary, pancreas revealed swollen and greyish nodular growth, firm in consistency and smooth when cut. Histopathology of ovary, liver, heart and brain corroborated with the gross lesions. Reticuloendotheliosis virus (REV) was confirmed by conducting polymerase chain reaction (PCR) (Mitra et al., 2013).

This study was carried out at Maize field of AICRP on Maize, Central farm, OUAT, Bhubaneswar during kharif 2014 and kharif 2015. The experiment comprised of 15 numbers of popular cultivars of maize viz. MRM 3777, DMH 7705, DKC9117, VIVEK HYBRID-9, VIVEK QPM-9, NMH-1247, NK-30, BIO 9681, BIO 9637, CORN S 6217, ASMH 177, HM-4, HQPM-1, HQPM -5 and DKC 8101. Among all the cultivars NK-30, Bio 9681 and ASMH 777 cultivars recorded resistant. DKC 9117, VIVEK HYBRID-9, NMH 1247, BIO9637, CORN S 6217 and DKC-8101 cultivars recorded moderately resistant.

The present investigation was conducted on submergence rice variety Swarna sub-1 to study the effect of environmental factors on the incidence of yellow stem borer, Scirpophaga incertulas (Walker) during Kharif season of 2016 and 2017 at Agricultural Research Farm, Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. A roving survey in maize growing mandals in Krishna and Guntur districts during kharif 2017-18, kharif 2018-19 to record the incidence and damage per cent of Chilo partellus (swinhoe) in the farmer fields. Studies were conducted on the incidence of maize stem borer, Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) at DARS, Budgam, SKUAST-K during the Kharif season, 2015. Sorghum shoot fly [Atherigona soccata (Rondani)] is one of the most important pests of grain sorghum. It is important to understand the nature of gene action to breed for resistance to the target insect pest. In the present study, a population of 259 sorghum recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from cross 296B (shoot fly susceptible) x IS 18551 (shoot fly resistant) were evaluated in shoot fly screening nursery to study the inheritance of shoot fly resistance.
