Ebook "The biology of dendritic cells and HIV infection" focuses on the role of DCs in the pathogenesis and immunity of HIV-1 infection. It has recently been clarified that DCs are important targets and reservoirs of HIV and may play an important role in virus spreading to T cells. Interestingly, HIV can exploit many of the cellular processes responsible for the generation and regulation of the adaptive immune responses to gain access to its main target cells, i.e. the CD4+ T lymphocytes.

Galectin-9 is a member of the galectin family and has been reported to have a tumor-promoting or antitumor effect in response to the immune microenvironment. However, the immunomodulatory effect of galectin-9 in colorectal cancer (CRC) remains unclear. The antigen presentation and antitumor immune effects of galectin-9 in CRC were examined in this study.

Mecp2 null mice model Rett syndrome (RTT) a human neurological disorder affecting females after apparent normal pre- and peri-natal developmental periods. Neuroanatomical studies in cerebral cortex of RTT mouse models revealed delayed maturation of neuronal morphology and autonomous as well as non-cell autonomous reduction in dendritic complexity of postnatal cortical neurons.

Only 10–30% of oesophageal and rectal adenocarcinoma patients treated with neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy have a complete pathological response. Inflammatory and angiogenic mediators in the tumour microenvironment (TME) may enable evasion of anti-tumour immune responses.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) derived from bone marrow are plural-potent stem cells with immune regulatory functions. We aimed to evaluate role of FcγRIIB in the regulation of bone marrow-derived MSC function. MSCs were prepared from mouse bone marrow derived from wild-type (WT) or FcγRIIB-deficient (FcγRIIB-/-) mice.

Dendritic cells (DCs) are the most potent antigen-presenting cells (APCs) that affect prime naive T cells and create proper immune responses. The uncontrolled growth of cancer cells often results from the cell’s successful inhibition of cytotoxic T lymphocytes. In addition to conventional cancer treatments, including surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy, immunotherapies have been seen to offer promising and innovative cancer treatments. Currently, DC therapy is one of the most popular immunotherapies because it uses tumour antigen-pulsed DC vaccines to fight against cancers.

Exosomes represent an important mode of intercellular communication and play key roles in many physiological and pathological processes. Exosomes have hitherto exhibited their capacity to modulate biological activities through their carrying of functional molecules such as proteins, lipids, and genetic materials. In the current study, we investigated exosomes released by mature dendritic cells (mDCs) and umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UCMSCs) under Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) conditions. Ultracentrifugation was used to isolate and purify the exosomes.

IL-10 is an anti-inflammatory cytokine, participating in induction of immune tolerance and cell apoptotic death. Dendritic cells (DCs) is the most professional antigen-presenting cells among innate immune cells to exert generation and maintenance of immunological memory mediated through activation of T and B lymphocytes. The STAT signalling pathway plays a regulatory role of maturation and differentiation of immune cells.

The priming role of dendritic cells on the cancer cytotoxic effects of cytokine-induced killer cells
In this research, DCs were differentiated from mononuclear cells in culture medium supplemented with Granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), and Interleukin-4 (IL-4), and were induced to mature with cancer cell antigens. Umbilical cord blood mononuclear cells were induced into CIK cells by Interferonγ (IFN-γ), anti-CD3 antibody and IL-2. After 4-day exposure (with DC:CIK = 1:10), DCs and CIK cells interacted with each other.

The capacity of dendritic cells to initiate T cell responses is related to their ability to redistribute MHC class II mole-cules from the intracellular MHC class II compartments to the cell surface. This redistribution occurs during dendritic cell development as they are converted from an antigen capturing, immature dendritic cell into an MHC class II-peptide presenting mature dendritic cell. During this matu-ration, antigen uptake and processing are down-regulated and peptide-loaded class II complexes become expressed in a stable manner on the cell surface. ...

The plasma membrane proteins CD1a, CD1b and CD1c are expressed by human dendritic cells, the professional antigen-presenting cells of the immune system, and present lipid antigens to T lymphocytes. CD1e belongs to the same family of molecules, but accumulates as a membrane-associated form in the Golgi compartments of immature dendritic cells and as a soluble cleaved form in the lysosomes of mature dendritic cells.

Abstract Critical to brain development is the proper growth and maturation of the axons underlying neuronal circuitry and communication throughout the nervous system. During development, the axon undergoes a remarkable process of outgrowth from the cell body, elongation, pathfinding to its target, differentiation of its synaptic junction, and establishment of connections with dendritic and/or somatic synapses. In the human brain, the most dramatic period of axonal development is midgestation to the end of the second year of life (i.e.
