This study conducted an assessment of the effect of alkalinity on the partial nitrification (PN) process and the performance of a partial nitrification - denitrification (PN - DN) system applied in swine wastewater treatment (SWW). The system consisted of a batch-operated PN reactor and a continuously operated DN reactor and was divided into two main experiments.

Municipal wastewater treatment plants generally utilise biological activated sludge processes to remove organic compounds and nitrogen. The biological nitrogen removal (BNR) occurs in two steps, nitrification (ammonium removal) and denitrification (nitrates removal). This study focused on a medium-sized wastewater treatment plant (WTP) which experienced poor nitrification for years, mainly when the weather temperature drops.

The present study implied that not only chemical fertilizers but also irrigation water was the major source of nitrogen into the paddy. In addition, microbiological nitrification and denitrification were presumed based on the temporal isotopic variations.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of an autotrophic denitrification during an anaerobic fermentation process usingH2/CO2 mixture gas (80:20, v/v) as sole energy source. Chemostat reactors were operated with anaerobically acclimated hydrogenotrophic methanogens culture broth.

This study, therefore, aimed to investigate the application of biochar from agricultural wastes to remove the excess nitrogen in domestic wastewater. In particular, this work examined the utilization of biochar obtained from coffee husk pyrolyzed at 350 oC to adsorb ammonium. Besides, adding biochar could be a simple and effective method for the initiation of activated sludge granulation to facilitate the treatment of low C/N ratio wastewater.

Soil health refers to the biological, chemical, and physical features of soil that are essential to long-term, sustainable agricultural productivity with minimal environmental impact. Thus, soil health provides an overall picture of soil functionality. Although it cannot be measured directly, soil health can be inferred by measuring specific soil properties (e.g. organic matter content) and by observing soil status (e.g. fertility).

Nitrogen is the key nutrient factor that influences soil fertility and productivity. It is the mineral nutrient that exists in different forms, but nitrate form is the most preferred form by plants. Irrespective of the form in which N is applied to soil, it undergoes transformation viz. mineralization (ammonification, nitrification), denitrification etc. by enzymes produced by micro organisms.

Denitrification is generally considered an anaerobic process. However, in recent years it has been shown that bacteria can also reduce nitrate to nitrite under aerobic conditions. The characterization of biologically available nitrogen forms and their biological cycling mechanisms is important for ecological and agricultural implications. In this study, aerobic nitrate reducers were isolated from greenhouse soil.

The methane oxidation and the denitrification processes seemed to be happened simultaneously in one column of the two-stage bioreactor and demonstrated its advantages. Methane utilized concentration in the medium of the methane oxidation column increased from 1 to 2.1 mg/L, which resulted in more soluble organic carbon was created and supplied for denitrifiers.
