Denitrifying bacteria
-
Bioremediation technology has been emergently considered as an economic and environmental-friendly manner to treat inorganic nitrogen in tropically coastal aquaculture ponds. Two laboratory scale experiments were conducted to examine efficacy of nitrogen removal of some bioremediators.

This is followed by the nitrogen cycle with much emphasis on de-nitrification, the bacteria responsible and the substrate they feed on. It discovers that, the suitability of different domestic wastes such as (pine bark, vegetable waste, commercial garden refuse, fresh and immature composted garden refuse etc.) are easily accessible and relatively cheap. The study concludes by suggesting the usage of the CGRraw, 25/75 mix substrate and fresh composted commercial garden refuse because they are said to produce better suitability than others and that they denitrify within the stipulated time.

Denitrification is generally considered an anaerobic process. However, in recent years it has been shown that bacteria can also reduce nitrate to nitrite under aerobic conditions. The characterization of biologically available nitrogen forms and their biological cycling mechanisms is important for ecological and agricultural implications. In this study, aerobic nitrate reducers were isolated from greenhouse soil.

If the soil becomes saturated, oxygen may become scarce and in anoxic conditions, denitrifying bacteria may convert the nitrate to nitrogen gases (NO, N2O, and N2). Nitrogen converted to these gases becomes unavailable for plant uptake or for surface water contamination. Additionally, saturated soil during the growing season is harmful to many crops like maize that cannot tolerate low oxygen concentrations in the root zone for more than a few days.
