  • The aim of this research is to investigate the energy performance and water usage of aquatic centres. The objectives are to: 1. develop a guideline for the definition of aquatic centres in Victoria for the purpose of energy and water benchmarking; 2. benchmark the energy and water consumption of aquatic centres by analysing the data collected from existing facilities in Victoria; 3. To investigate operational and building design features that will improve the energy and water performance of a sample aquatic centre by using building performance simulation.

  • This thesis presents the design of a test asset system capable of testing GNSS receivers for speed accuracy and the Uncertainty of Measurements (UOM) analysis for this system. The test asset system utilises a variety of engineering solutions and is capable of maintaining high accuracy benchmarks in speed measurements. The test asset system has an UOM equal 0.4 km/h for the entire range of speeds used for GNSS speed testing. The system was designed, assembled and tested to ensure the system maintains its integrity and capability to test GNSS receivers for speed measurement.

  • This thesis analyses the Australian resources equity market reaction to the 2010 resource tax announcements. These taxes were explicitly designed to meet tax neutrality conditions. Tax neutrality implies that taxes should not incur substitution effects that result in economic inefficiency. These taxes were intended to generate revenue (i.e., an income effect) while not distorting economic incentives.

  • This research emphasises Marxist feminist standpoints in order to study typography in its commodity form. Undertaking a critical analysis of typography and the context in which it has been marketed and sold, I intend to problematise the fetishisation of language and interrogate its sociomaterial relations as expressions of commodity feminism within a postfeminist landscape.

  • This research investigates the interactive effects of usability, the designer perspective and user expectations on the user experience (UX) of e-commerce websites. It incorporates the theoretical underpinnings of Norman’s (1988) seminal research specifically, Mental Models and Nielsen’s User Categories (1993) to explore the different mental models, domain and technology expertise of two distinct groups – users and designers – in the interaction with a selected system image, that of the e-commerce website.

  • This search resulted in the development of a practical software tool based on animated Venn diagrams (Dvenn) that attempted to exploit the inherent human ability to perceive quantities visually, a faculty described herein as visual numeracy. The exploitation of this faculty is considered here to be a valuable aid for group understanding of business presentation data. The development of the tool was an essential part of the research that was undertaken and the resulting software forms a significant portion of this practise based research.

  • The aim of this thesis is investigate and design a small antenna which can be embedded onto a Polyethylene substrate (used for making roof tiles). The antenna can be used to harvest ambient energy by connecting it to a rectifier. Due to the dimensional constraints of a roof tile as well as the materials used, there are limitations imposed on the antenna size, and thus the radiation efficiency and bandwidth often become a limiting factor in the overall performance of the system.

  • This thesis is the result of research into the different generations at work in an engineering consulting organisation in Victoria. The investigation was designed to research generational differences in values, attitudes and behaviours and their implications for management. This included a debate on whether the differences are generational or a consequence of age or stage-of-life.

  • This thesis investigates the choice behaviour of first year undergraduate students through proposing and testing a conceptual model. The psychological constructs of personal values, motivation, selection criteria, demographic and socioeconomic factors introduced as underlying drivers provide invaluable insight into the pathways of influence and relationships between student types and their preference towards a particular degree program at a particular university.

  • This research uses empirical data from a cross-sectional survey of households that was specifically designed to examine the vulnerability and resilience of households to global macroeconomic shocks. In early 2011 six communities in each country were surveyed, ranging from inner-urban squatter settlements of the respective capital cities to some of the most geographically distant areas in each country. The original contribution of this thesis is that it marks the first time that the micro effects of macroeconomic events are studied in such a broad range of communities in either country.

  • In this study, two models were proposed: a five-stage SISP maturity model for defining SISP maturity and another one for assessing the degree of SISP maturity. The five SISP maturity levels were defined as: Rudimentary Planning, Ineffectual Planning, Attainable Planning, Sustainable Planning, and Adaptable Planning. The assessment model was structured as a third-order system, where eight first-order dimensions were termed as Form and Content, Collaboration, Policies, Stakeholders' Designation, Knowledge Bank, Technology, Time Dimension, and Viability.
