Genetic diversity provides the capacity for plants to meet changing environments. It is fundamentally important in crop improvement. Fifty-nine local maize lines developed at INERA and 41 exotic (temperate and tropical) inbred lines were characterized using 1057 SNP markers to (1) analyse the genetic diversity in a diverse set of maize inbred lines; (2) determine the level of genetic diversity in INERA inbred lines and patterns of relationships of these inbred lines developed from two sources; and (3) examine the genetic differences between local and exotic germplasms.

The functional genome of agronomically important plant species remains largely unexplored, yet presents a virtually untapped resource for targeted crop improvement. Functional elements of regulatory DNA revealed through profiles of chromatin accessibility can be harnessed for fine-tuning gene expression to optimal phenotypes in specific environments.

Argonaute proteins (AGOs) are important players in the regulation of plant development by directing sRNAs to target mRNAs. In maize (Zea mays), AGO18b is a tassel-enriched and grass-specific AGO. Previous studies have shown that AGO18b is highly expressed in tassels during meiosis and negatively regulates determinacy of spikelet meristems.

ERECTA (ER) is a leucine-rich repeat-receptor-like kinase gene (LRR-RLK) encoding a protein isolated from Arabidopsis. Although the regulatory functions of ER genes have been widely explored in plant development and disease resistance, their roles in drought stress responses remain to be clarified.

Maize is one of the most important field crops in the world. Most of the key agronomic traits, including yield traits and plant architecture traits, are quantitative. Fine mapping of genes/ quantitative trait loci (QTL) influencing a key trait is essential for marker-assisted selection (MAS) in maize breeding.

Maize dwarf mosaic virus (MDMV), a member of the genus Potyvirus, infects maize and is nonpersistently transmitted by aphids. Several plant viruses have been developed as tools for gene expression and gene silencing in plants. The capacity of MDMV for both gene expression and gene silencing were examined.

Zhengdan 958 (Zheng 58 × Chang 7–2), a commercial hybrid that is produced in a large area in China, is the result of the successful use of the heterotic pattern of Reid × Tang-SPT. The jointing stage of maize is the key period from vegetative to reproductive growth, which determines development at later stages and heterosis to a certain degree.

: Frequently occurring drought stress negatively affects the production of maize worldwide. Numerous efforts have been made to develop drought-tolerant maize lines and to explore drought tolerant mechanisms in maize. However, there is a lack of comparative studies on transcriptomic changes between drought-tolerant and control maize lines.

Chloroplasts play an important role in plant growth and development. The chloroplast genome contains approximately twenty group II introns that are spliced due to proteins encoded by nuclear genes. CAF2 is one of these splicing factors that has been shown to splice group IIB introns in maize and Arabidopsis thaliana.

Twenty local maize germplasm collected from various parts of Nagaland along with a check variety was laid in randomized block design with two replications in the research farm of School of agricultural research and rural development, Nagaland University, Medziphema during kharif 2019 to determine the variability present amongst the genotypes. The results showed significant differences for all characters studied except for number of ears per plant.

The plant-microbe interaction effect of these bacteria, either singly or in combination, on growth and development of maize (Malviya Hybrid Maize 2) were also studied. The results reveal that the combination of BHU8 with RRE3 proved to be most beneficial and efficient with regards to many of the growth parameters like shoot and root length, number of leaves, shoot and root fresh weight, shoot, root dry weight and chlorophyll content.

Beneficial biofilms developed by nitrogen fixing bacteria and P - solubilising fungi in vitro conditions and also used as biofertilizers in non - leguminous crops and also observed that the bacteria colonized fungal mycelia to form biofilms. The biofilms showed high rates of biological nitrogen fixation and organic acid production which directly influences the synthesis of indole acetic acid like substances than microbes when used as monocultures. (Seneiviratne et al., 2003).

Pearlmillet (Pennisetum glaucum L.) is largely grown for grain and fodder purpose under those situations where other crops generally fail. Pearlmillet as a food crop is limited to the developing countries in Asia, and particularly in Africa and ranked sixth in the world followed by rice, wheat, maize, barley and sorghum (Anonymous, 2010-11).
