This thesis aimed to explore a range of social-ecological factors in the understanding of adolescent suicide ideation. Comprising two studies, the first study examined adolescents’ differential perceptions of mother involvement and father involvement, and their association with adolescent suicide ideation and psychological well-being.

The thesis investigates the nature of this developmental process by employing a constructivistinterpretive research methodology and using qualitative research methods. The empirical data was drawn from group discussions and face-to-face interviews with two distinct cohorts of women. The first cohort comprised twenty-two participants, of which five were adolescent women aged fourteen to sixteen years. The thesis focused only on examining those women who were financially successful and not others.

This paper is an analysis of an impact assessment conducted by University of Arkansas students and finalized by Abby Davidson during the 2014 Community Development in Mozambique study abroad program. The assessment was based on a developmental poultry organization in the Nampula region. In order to evaluation the assessment several theories of impact assessment were utilized. Construction of a proper counterfactual, the mitigation of selection bias, appropriateness of impact indicators, and validity were all used to consider the methodologies employed in the aforementioned assessment.

NBR1(named as next toBRCA1) was originally cloned as a candidate gene for the ovarian cancer antigen CA125, using expression cloning with the anti-CA125 Ig, OC125.NBR1 has been of interest due to its position close toBRCA1, although no involvement in breast or ovarian cancer has been demonstrated. Recently, the antigen CA125 has been cloned, and identi®ed as a new mucin, MUC16, entirely dierent from NBR1.

E2F transcription factors play an important role in the regulation of cell cycle progression. E2F6, the most recently identified member of the E2F family, is a retinoblastoma-protein-independent transcriptional repressor that is required for developmental patterning of the axial skeleton. It has recently been shown that theE2f6locus produces two different mRNAs, E2F6 and E2F6b. The E2F6b mRNA contains an additional exon that is inserted by alternative splicing.

All higher organisms divide major biochemical steps into different cellular compartments and often use tissue-specific division of metabolism for the same purpose.Such spatial resolution is accompanied with temporal changes of meta-bolite synthesis in response to environmental stimuli or developmental needs.Although analyses of primary and secondary gene products, i.e. transcripts, proteins, and metabolites, regularly do not cope with this spatial and temporal resolution, these gene products are often observed to be highly coregulated forming complex networks....

Cockayne syndrome (CS) is a rare inherited human genetic disorder char-acterized by developmental abnormalities, UV sensitivity, and premature aging. The CS group B (CSB) protein belongs to the SNF2-family of DNA-dependent ATPases and is implicated in transcription elongation, transcription coupled repair, and base excision repair. It is a DNA stimula-ted ATPase and remodels chromatin in vitro. We demonstrate for the first time that full-length CSB positively cooperates in ATP hydrolysis as a function of protein concentration....

Prion diseases are characterized by the accumulation of a pathogenic mis-folded form of a prion protein (PrP) encoded by the Prnpgene in humans. In the present study in zebrafish, two transcripts and the corresponding genes encoding prion proteins, PrP1 and PrP2, related to human PrP have been characterized with a relatively divergent deduced amino acid sequence, but a well preserved overall organization of structural prion pro-tein motifs.

Schistosomes are parasitic flatworms that infect millions of people in (sub)tropical areas around the world. Glycoconjugates of schistosomes play a critical role in the interaction of the different developmental stages of the parasite with the host. In particular, glycosylated components of the eggs produced by the adult worm pairs living in the bloodstream are strongly immunogenic.

Epigenetic mechanisms control eukaryotic development beyond DNA-stored information. There are several pathways, including histone tail mod-ifications, histone variant incorporation, nucleosome remodelling, DNA methylation and noncoding RNAs that together all contribute to the dynamic ‘make-up’ of chromatin under distinct developmental options.

HIC1(hypermethylated in cancer) is a tumour suppressor gene located in 17p13.3, a region frequently hypermethylated or deleted in many types of prevalent human tumour.HIC1is also a candidate for a contiguous-gene syndrome, the Miller–Dieker syndrome, a severe form of lissencephaly accompanied by developmental anomalies.

Plants, like many other organisms, have endogenous biological clocks that enable them to organize their physiological, metabolic and developmental processes so that they occur at optimal times. The best studied of these biolo-gical clocks are the circadian systems that regulate daily (24 h) rhythms. At the core of the circadian system in every organism are oscillators respon-sible for generating circadian rhythms.

The zinc-finger cellular nucleic acid binding protein (CNBP) is a strikingly conserved single-stranded nucleic acid binding protein essential for normal forebrain formation during mouse and chick embryogenesis. CNBP cDNAs from a number of vertebrates have been cloned and analysed. CNBP is mainly conformed by seven retroviral Cys-Cys-His-Cys zinc-knuckles and a glycine⁄arginine rich region box.

Teleost fishes differ from mammals in their fat deposition and distribution. The gene for adipocyte-type fatty acid-binding protein (A-FABP or FABP4) has not been identified thus far in fishes. We have determined the cDNA sequence and defined the structure of a fatty acid-binding protein gene (designated fabp4) from the zebrafish genome.

Diapause embryos of the crustaceanArtemia franciscanaexhibit extreme stress tolerance, a property thought to involve molecular chaperones known as small heat shock proteins. To further explore this idea, the struc-ture, function and synthesis of ArHsp22, an Artemiasmall heat shock protein, were characterized.
